ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University volleyball team was back on the court when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils in a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks, who swept Blackburn (Ill.) College last night, were able to sweep the Red Devils in three straight sets (25-11, 25-13, 25-17) to improve to 11-11 on the season and 5-5 in conference play. With the loss, the Red Devils fall to 4-17 on the season and 0-9 in the SLIAC.
Prior to the start of the match, the volleyball team honored their three seniors for all of their contributions to the program. The three seniors that were honored were
Mary Nelson,
Kyra Gensel, and
Ali Spohr.
The Gorloks finished the match with 44 kills and a .220 attacking percentage. They added six service aces, three blocks, 41 assists and 54 digs. They held the Red Devils to 18 kills in the match and a -.038 attacking percentage.
Webster came out strong in the first set of the match as they jumped out to an early 9-1 lead. Eureka battled back and cut the lead to five, but a 5-1 run midway through the set put the Gorloks up 18-9 in the game. They continued to play well as the set progressed and cruised to a 25-11 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second set and were able to jump out to a 10-4 lead in the game. They were able to extend their lead to 11 late in the set and never let the Red Devils back in it as they won the second set by a final score of 25-13.
Webster once again got off to a good start in the third set as they held a 9-3 lead early. The Red Devils were able to claw their way back into the game and cut the lead to four, but a 4-0 run to end the set solidified the sweep for Webster.
Lauren Borik and
Kaylee Portell led the attack for the Gorloks as Borik finished with a match high 12 kills while Portell added nine.
Mary Nelson and
Ali Spohr ran the offense for Webster as Nelson finished with a match high 14 assists and Spohr finished with 13 assists.
Kyra Gensel and
Tori Cichelero both recorded double-digit digs as Gensel finished with 19 and Cichelero finished with 14.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Monday, October 25
th when they travel across town to take on the Maryville (Mo.) University Saints in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
