Gorloks Swept by Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University volleyball team was back in action when they traveled across town to take on the NCAA Division II Maryville (Mo.) University Saints in a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were swept in three straight sets (17-25, 13-25, 16-25) to fall to 11-12 on the season. With the win, the Saints improve to 9-13 on the year.

The Gorloks had a tough time getting anything going in this one as they were held to 24 kills and a .030 attacking percentage. They finished with three service aces, five blocks, 23 assists, and 43 digs in the match. The Saints finished with 25 kills and a .196 attacking percentage.

In the first set of the match, the Gorloks came out and exchanged points with the Saints early. However, with the score tied at 10, the Saints went on an 8-3 run to take an 18-13 lead in the game. Webster did their best to get back into the set, but the Saints were able to close it out to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

After dropping the second set by a final score of 25-13, Webster found themselves trailing 5-0 to start the third. They battled back and were able to cut the lead to one, but another run from the Saints put them up six midway through the set. Webster tried to claw their way back into it, but Maryville played well down the stretch to solidify the sweep.

Kyra Gensel led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 12 digs in the match. Lauren Borik led the attack for Webster as she finished with a team high seven kills. Ali Spohr and Mary Nelson ran the offense for the Gorloks as they each finished with six assists.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, October 27th when they travel to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers in a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
