GREENVILLE, Ill. – This evening the Webster University volleyball team was back on the court when they traveled to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers in a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Panthers in four sets (14-25, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25) to fall to 11-13 on the season and 5-6 in SLIAC play. With the win, the Panthers improve to 20-6 on the year and 10-0 in the conference.
The Gorloks finished the match with 46 kills and a .077 attacking percentage. They finished with four service aces, 11 blocks, 46 assists, and 94 digs in the contest. The Panthers finished with 52 kills while recording a .142 attacking percentage.
After dropping the first set by a final score of 25-14, the Gorloks found themselves trailing 10-5 early in the second. They battled back and were able to tie the score at 13 before going on a 5-2 run to take an 18-15 lead in the set. The Panthers tried to catch up to Webster, but the Gorloks were able to stay ahead for the rest of the set to tie the match at one.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the third set and were able to match the Panthers point-for-point. The score remained close throughout the rest of the set, but with the score tied at 22 the Panthers closed out the game on a 3-1 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Webster came out strong to start the fourth set as they took a 6-2 lead early in the game. The Panthers bounced back and were able to tie the score at seven, but another run from the Gorloks put them up 16-14 midway through the set. The Panthers once again bounced back and tied the score at 19, and then went on a 6-2 run to solidify the win.
Kaylee Portell led the attack for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 15 kills in the match.
Emma Leppien and
Mary Nelson ran the offense for Webster as Leppien finished with a team high 21 assists while Nelson added 18 assists. The Gorloks had five players finished with double-digit digs including a team high 20 from
Lauren Borik.
Kyra Gensel added 19 digs,
Emma Leppien finished with 18 digs,
Mary Nelson had 17 digs, and
Tori Cichelero finished with 15 digs to round out the top performers for Webster.
The volleyball team will return to the court for their final game of the regular season on Tuesday, November 2
nd when they host to Westminster (Mo.) College in a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. in Grant's Gymnasium.
