FULTON, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action last night when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays in a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Blue Jays in four sets (25-27, 23-25, 25-17, 21-25) to fall to 7-9 on the season and 3-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Blue Jays improve to 8-9 on the season and 4-1 in SLIAC play.
Webster put together 42 kills on 122 total attacks while posting a .180 attacking percentage. They added five service aces, eight blocks, 39 assists, and 61 digs. The Blue Jays finished with 56 kills on 150 attacks and had an attacking percentage of .213.
The Gorloks came out in the first set of the match and jumped out to an early 9-5 lead. They continued to play well as the set progressed and held a 20-15 lead late in the game. However, the Blue Jays battled back and were able to go on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 22. They held all the momentum at that point and were able to outscore the Gorloks 5-3 down the final stretch to solidify the first set win.
After dropping a close second set 25-23, the Gorloks bounced back to start the third. They jumped out to an early 10-7 lead before going on an 8-3 run to take an 18-10 lead in the game. The Blue Jays were able to cut Webster's lead down to five, but another run from the Gorloks solidified the third set win.
In the fourth set, both sides came out and exchanged points early in the game. However, the Blue Jays went on a 5-2 run midway through the set to take an 11-7 lead in the game. Webster was able to cut the lead to three, but that was as close as they would get as the Blue Jays closed them out down the stretch to solidify the four-set win.
Lauren Borik led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 14 kills to go along with 13 digs.
Mary Nelson also had a nice game as she finished with 12 kills and 13 assists. In addition,
Emma Leppien finished with a team high 18 assists and added nine digs, while
Kyra Gensel added a team high 15 digs to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
The Gorloks are back on Thursday, October 7
th when they host Principia (Ill.) College for a nonconference matchup. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. in Grant's Gymnasium.
