MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Webster University women's volleyball team was back in action this morning when they traveled to Monmouth, Illinois, to take on the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots in a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were able to defeat Monmouth in a five-set thriller (19-25, 25-13, 25-14, 22-25, 15-12) to improve to 9-9 on the season. With the loss, the Fighting Scots fall to 8-11 on the year.
The Gorloks put together 60 kills in the match while posting a .293 attacking percentage. They held the Fighting Scots to 49 kills in the match and a .210 attacking percentage. The Gorloks also finished with nine service aces, five blocks, 50 assists, and 81 digs throughout the five sets.
After dropping the first set 25-19, the Gorloks bounced back in the second. They started the set on a 4-1 run and held a 17-8 lead midway through the game. Monmouth tried to get back into the set but the Gorloks were able to end the game on an 8-5 run to tie the match at one set apiece.
Webster carried over their momentum into the third set as they jumped out to a 12-5 lead early. They never let the Fighting Scots back into the game and cruised to a 25-14 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Gorloks dropped the fourth set 25-22, but were able to bounce back in the crucial fifth set. The game started with both team exchanging points early, but the Gorloks were able to end the set on a 9-6 run to solidify their ninth win of the season.
Lauren Borik,
Ali Spohr, and
Kaylee Portell all led the way for the Gorloks attack as Borik finished with a match high 19 kills, Spohr finished with 12 kills, and Portell finished with 11 kills. Spohr also added 13 assists while
Delaney Demman finished with a team high 21 assists.
Defensively,
Tori Cichelero finished with a team high 17 digs,
Delaney Demman finished with 15 digs,
Kyra Gensel finished with 13 digs, and
Lauren Borik added 13 digs to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks are back in action on Wednesday, October 13
th when they play host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins in a SLIAC matchup. This game will serve as the volleyball teams annual Dig Pink game with first serve set for 7 p.m.
