ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University women's basketball team took the court as they played host to the University of Health Science and Pharmacy (Mo.) Eutectics for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were able to stay unbeaten on the season as they defeated the Eutectics by a final score of 84-72 to improve to 9-0 for the first time in school history. With the loss, the Eutectics fall to 8-6 on the year.
Webster shot the ball well in this one as they went 29-for-63 (46%) from the floor and 7-for-21 (33.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 31-30 and forced the Eutectics to turn the ball over 27 times in the contest. They turned those 27 turnovers into 27 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 14 assists in the game.
Webster came out in the first quarter and took it to the Eutectics early as they jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game. The Eutectics battled back and were able to cut the lead to five late in the quarter, but the Gorloks would take a 23-16 lead into the second. Health Sciences and Pharmacy continued to push the tempo to start the second and cut the Gorloks lead to three midway through the frame. However, Webster answered with a 13-5 run to push their lead to 11 late in the half before taking a 44-35 lead into the locker room.
The Eutectics came out in the third quarter and cut the Gorloks lead to three late in the period. However, a 7-1 run to end the frame put the Gorloks up 64-55 heading into the fourth. Webster pushed their lead to 15 to start the fourth and never looked back as they held off the Eutectics down the stretch to solidify the win.
Addison Beussink led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a season high 27 points and a team high 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
Julie Baudendistel also had a great game as she finished with a season high 23 points. In addition,
Naomi Johnson added 13 points and
Lauryn Freeman finished with a game high six assists to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, January 1
st when they host the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots for their final nonconference game of the season. The game is set to tip-off at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
