Women's Tennis Opens Season With 5-4 Setback to Division II Truman State

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Webster University Women's Tennis opened its 2021 season here Sunday afternoon at Vetta Sports Concord with a 5-4 setback to NCAA Division II member Truman State University.

With the loss, Webster falls to 0-1 on the season, while Truman State improves their record to 2-2 with the win.

Sunday's match began with doubles and the Gorloks came away with two wins to take an early 2-1 lead in the match.

Webster's doubles wins came at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, while Truman State picked up a win at No. 2 doubles, 8-0, over Webster's duo of freshman Bailey Higgins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and junior Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North).

At No. 1 doubles, senior Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) teamed with sophomore Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis., Muskego) to post an 8-6 win over Truman's tandem of Alex Rogers and Samantha Seggerman.

Meanwhile, at No. 3 doubles, junior Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) partnered with sophomore Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) and the Gorlok duo played well together as they posted an 8-1 win over Truman's No. 3 team of Rachel Shelly and Angelina Partenheimer.

Leading 2-1 after doubles, Webster turned its focus to singles action, but the Bulldogs would rally and take our of the six singles matches to secure the victory.

Webster's two singles wins on Sunday came at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots in the line-up.

At No. 4 singles, Ferguson followed up her win in doubles by posting an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Truman's Caprice Huitron, while the other singles win came at No. 6 as sophomore Emily Casey (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) came away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Partenheimer.

Truman would win at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles and that set up the winner of No. 1 singles to determine the match outcome. The No. 3 singles match went to a third set as Seggerman defeated Serbentas, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.

Sunday's No. 1 singles match featured Brezovar facing Rogers in what turned out to be the match of the day. In the match, Brezovar and Rogers went back-and-forth in the opening set, before Rogers won 6-4. In the second set, both players once again went back-and forth and much like the first set, Rogers would ultimately prevail in a second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4) to help the Bulldogs secure the match victory.

The Gorloks are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 4 as they host another Division II school, Maryville University, for a 6 p.m. match at the Webster Groves Recreational Complex.
