Men's Basketball Scores Season High 133 Points in Home Win Over Greenville

WEBSTER GROVES - Playing just its second home game of the season here Friday evening, Webster University shot a school record 73 percent from the field and scored a season high 133 points en route to posting an impressive 133-117 victory over Greenville University in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at Grant Gymnasium.

The victory was the ninth for the Gorloks over Greenville since they adopted the "System" offensive scheme prior to the beginning of the 2015-16 season. Webster is now 9-4 playing against the "System", including winning four of the last six games overall with the only setbacks being a 98-97 loss last season at Greenville and a 140-129 loss in this year's season opener at Greenville.

Friday's victory, which extended Webster's home court win streak to 13 consecutive games since suffering a 65-58 loss to Hanover on Nov. 23, 2019 and is home conference win streak to 23 consecutive games, helped the Gorloks improve its record to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the SLIAC, while Greenville fell to 2-9 overall and 2-2 in the SLIAC. The 13 game home court winning streak is currently the fourth longest active streak in NCAA Division III.

In the win, Webster set new school records for field goal percentage (73.1 percent) and made field goals (57) and set new single season highs for points scored (133), made field goals (57), field goal attempts (78), rebounds (49), free throws made (17), free throw attempts (27) and first half points (65). The 133 points is tied for second most in a game in school history and the most points scored in a game since tallying 133 points against Greenville on Nov. 30, 2016.

It marked the second time this season that Webster set a new school record for field goal percentage against Greenville as in the team's first meeting on Feb. 24, 2021, the Gorloks shot a then school record 71.8 percent from the field in the 140-129 loss. The 73.1 field goal percentage is the second highest in a game in Division III this season.

Seven Gorloks scored in double figures against the Panthers, including two scoring 20 or more points as senior forward Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach/Royal Palm Beach) tallied a season high 30 points and added 11 points for his first double-double of the season. Etienne scored 20 of his 30 points after halftime. In addition to Etienne, sophomore guard Wynne Brown, Jr. (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) added 23 points and a career-high 13 assists for his second career double-double.

The other five double-digit scorers were freshman forward Markus Becton (Bellwood, Ill./Westchester St. Joseph), who tallied his career double-double with 19 points and a game and career-high 14 rebounds, while senior forward Ethan Hughes (Union, Mo./Park University) tied a season high with 12 points and dished out a career-high tying five assists, sophomore forward Connor Diecker (Freeburg, Ill./Bethel University) had 12 points, freshman guard Malcolm Logue (Lebanon, Tenn./Lebanon) scored 11 points and junior guard/forward Stephen Hawkins (Cape Coral, Fla./Patrick Henry CC) added 10 points in the win.

Brown, Jr.'s, 13 assists were just one shy of the school record of 14 assists set by Terry Gray against Parks College on Feb. 14, 1985.

Greenville, who shot 40 percent from the field and 35 percent from the 3-point line in the game, jumped in front 13-6 in the game's opening three-plus minutes. After lay-ups by Diecker and Hawkins dropped GU's lead to 13-10, Greenville used a 15-10 run push in front 28-20 just a little under eight minutes into the game.

The Gorloks, though, would respond with an 18-4 run that spanned nearly four minutes to push in front 38-32, including tying the game at 30-all on a lay-up by Etienne with 9:16 left in the opening half. After WU's run, Greenville would score seven of the next nine points to pull within 38-37 with 6:34 remaining in the half. That would be as close as Greenville would get the rest of the game.

Webster would answer Greenville back as they closed the first half on a 27-16 run to take a 66-53 lead at halftime. The run was keyed by nine points from Wynne, Jr., and a capped by a block, rebound and subsequent mammoth dunk by Etienne right before the buzzer.

In the second half, the Gorloks, who haven't lost a home conference game since suffering a 78-61 loss to Westminster (Mo.) College on Jan. 20, 2018, watched Greenville open the half on a 13-5 run to pull within 71-66 with 17:45 remaining. The Gorloks, though, answered with a 16-4 run to push in front, 87-70 with 14:48 left in the half.

After three-pointers by Kameron Vinsel and Ralph Jainaiz brought the Panthers within 87-78 with 13:40 left in the game, the Gorloks would use a 14-10 run to take a 101-88 lead, including topping the century mark on a basket by freshman guard Jason Coleman (Memphis, Tenn./Overton) with 9:22 remaining.

From that point, the Gorloks would keep its lead in double digits for most of the remainder of the game as the only time Webster's lead got under single digits was on a trey by Travis Dickey with 6:59 left in the game. Dickey's trey made the score, 107-99 in Webster's favor.

The Gorloks and Panthers would combine to score 44 points over the final seven minutes of the second half as Webster scored 26 points and Greenville tallied 17 points.

While seven Gorloks scored in double figures, five Greenville players reached double figures as Vinsel scored 22 points off the bench, while Phillip Curtis added 21 points and Kenneth Cooley tallied 16 and 11 rebounds. Henry Johnson and Jarred Johnson each scored 13 points in the loss.

Webster finished the game shooting 73 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3-point line, while Greenville shot 40 percent from the field and 35 percent (20-for-57) from the 3-point line.

The Gorloks held a 49-46 edge on the boards and dished out 36 assists on its 57 made baskets. In addition to the 13 assists by Brown, Jr., freshman guard Mark Moore (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) dished out seven assists.

After committing 33 turnovers against Greenville in this year's first game, the Gorloks had 21 on Friday and that led 23 points for the Panthers. They scored 47 points off of Webster's 33 turnovers in the first match-up. Greenville had 14 turnovers on the night.

Webster also blocked five shots in the win as Diecker and Hughes each blocked two shots.

The Gorloks will look to make its four straight wins this coming Tuesday, March 16 as they travel to Carlinville, Ill., for a 7:30 p.m. game against Blackburn College.
