CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued its hot play here Tuesday evening as the Gorloks offense exploded for a season high 93 points in posting a 93-41 victory over Blackburn College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Dawes Gymnasium.
With the victory, Webster improves to 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the SLIAC and extends its win streak to five consecutive games, while Blackburn falls to 1-5 overall and 1-5 in the league.
The 93 points are the most scored by the Gorloks in a game this season and the first time they reached 90 points since posting a 91-87 win at home over Eureka on Feb. 19, 2020.
While its offense scored a season high 93 points and had four players score in double figures, the Gorloks defense was just a good in Tuesday's win as they forced 40 Blackburn turnovers and scored 44 points off those turnovers. In addition, Webster's defense held the Beavers to 23 percent shooting from the field and 17 percent (3-for-18) shooting from the 3-point line.
Leading the way offensively for the Gorloks, who have now won 18 straight games in the series against Blackburn, was sophomore
Julie Baudendistel (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh), who scored 17 points in 19 minutes of action.
Along with Baudendistel, junior forward
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) added 16 points and nine rebounds, while freshman forward
Emily Ederer (Doniphan, Mo./Doniphan) posted her first career double-double as she had a career high 12 points and pulled down a career high 11 rebounds. The fourth double-digit scorer was senior guard
Kiara Rhines (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood), who had a career high 11 points off the bench.
For the game, all 11 Gorloks played in the game and every one of them scored at least a point and all 11 of them recorded at least one rebound as Webster held a 53-29 edge on the boards.
Webster's bench held a 44-4 edge in bench points and the Gorloks had a 54-8 advantage in points in the paint.
The Gorloks jumped in front 5-0 in the game's opening 23 seconds and eventually opened up a 25-7 lead with 5:03 left in the opening quarter. After a trey from Aryanna Harris pushed the Beavers within 25-10, the Gorloks would outscore Blackburn, 9-2 to close the quarter and hold a 34-12 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
Webster shot 54 percent from the field in the first quarter as Baudendistel and Beussink combined for 16 of those 34 points.
Blackburn committed 15 of their 40 turnovers in the quarter and the Gorloks scored 23 points off those turnovers. In fact, Blackburn committed 26 turnovers and Webster scored 34 points off those turnovers in the first half.
In the second quarter, Webster's defense held Blackburn to just six points as Webster opened the quarter by scoring 15 of the first 16 points to push out to a 49-13 lead with 3:17 left in the quarter. The run began with a trey from senior guard
Naomi Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) and was capped by two free throws by Ederer.
After Rhylee Freeman scored with 2:23 left in the quarter, the Gorloks would close the quarter on a 5-3 run to take a 54-18 lead at the half. The 54 first half points were a season high for the Gorloks.
Much like the second quarter, the Gorloks scored 22 points in the third quarter, including an 8-0 run to turn a 59-22 lead into a 67-22 advantage with 3:10 left in the period. The lead would grow to 48 points at 76-28 following a lay-up by freshman guard
Jordyn Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) with 16 seconds left.
Blackburn would open the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run to cut Webster's lead to 78-36, but the Gorloks would respond as they would score 13 of the next 16 points to push its lead to 91-39 with 3:13 left in the game following a lay-up by Rhines. The 52 point lead was the largest of the game for the Gorloks and Webster's largest lead of the season in a game.
Webster outscored Blackburn, 17-12 in the final period.
Mariah Hopson paced Blackburn with 10 points, while Harris and Taliyah Davis each had eight points in the loss.
The Gorloks finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line.
Webster also dished out 23 assists, including a career-high nine assists by junior guard
Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville). The nine assists are tied for eighth most in a game in school history.
The Gorloks had 21 steals for the game as Cottrell collected six and Grimes added four.
Webster committed 24 turnovers on the night and that led to 14 points for Blackburn.
The Gorloks will look to make it six consecutive wins this coming Friday, March 19 as they host Illinois College for a 6 p.m. non-conference match-up at Grant Gymnasium.
