Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 in Double Overtime at Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Webster University and Spalding University turned its first meeting of the 2020-21 season into an instant classic here Wednesday evening as the Gorloks and Golden Eagles battled for a little over 108 minutes without a goal until Spalding's Abdoulaya Pam scored on a header in the box with just 90 seconds left in the double overtime to earn a 1-0 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at the SU Sports Complex.

With the setback, Webster suffers its first loss of the season as the Gorloks fell to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the SLIAC, while Spalding improved to 1-1-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the league. The teams are scheduled to play a second match-up this season at World Wide Technology Soccer Park on April 7.

Wednesday's match was Webster's fourth double overtime match since the beginning of the 2019 season.

Despite being held without a goal for the first time this season, the Gorloks outshot the Golden Eagles, 17-7, including a 9-4 advantage on shots in the overtime periods. The Gorloks also held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks, including a 5-0 advantage in double overtime.

Just 23 seconds into the second overtime period, freshman forward/midfiedler Mark Moore (Hilllsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) put a shot on goal, but Spalding goalkeeper Danny Hernandez made one his six saves on the night.

A little over two minutes later, senior midfielder Logan Takizawa (Holualoa, Hawaii/Konawaena) had a chance to put the Gorloks on the board, but Hernandez made perhaps the save of the night to keep things scoreless.

Freshman midfielder/forward Carlos Llamas (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) put a shot goal in the 108th minute, but Hernandez came up with another save.

Meanwhile, in the first overtime period, Moore had two shots that went wide right and high in the first five minutes of the period and then in the 97th minute, Spalding's Alioune Cisse put a header on goal that was saved by senior goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh).

Amick made another save on a header in the 98th minute by Ethan Thornton to keep the match scoreless and force a second overtime.

For the match, Moore took six shots and put two shots on goal, while Llamas had three shots and Takizawa and sophomore forward Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) each had two shots in the loss.

Abdoulaye and Chadrick Mulondani each had two shots and a combined three shots on goal in the win.

Amick (1-1) played the entire match in goal for the Gorloks and had allowed just that one goal and made four saves and pushed his career save total to 133, which is tied for 11th on the school's all-time chart.

Hernandez played the entire match in goal for the Golden Eagles as he recorded the shutout and made six saves, including four of those saves coming in the overtime periods.

Both teams committed 15 fouls in the match.

The Gorloks will look to start a new win streak this coming Saturday, March 20 as they play host to Principia College (1-1, 1-1 SLIAC) in a 3:30 p.m. SLIAC match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
