MEDIAPOLIS, Iowa - The Webster men's soccer team continued its 2020-21 season here Tuesday afternoon as the Gorloks played to a scoreless draw in double overtime against Iowa Wesleyan in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Mediapolis High School.
With the tie, Webster is now 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the SLIAC, while Iowa Wesleyan stands at 2-0-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the league.
It was Webster's first scoreless tie in the regular season since posting a 0-0 tie in double overtime at Greenville on Oct. 13, 2018. In addition, its was Webster's second double overtime match of the season as the Gorloks fell 1-0 in double overtime at Spalding last Wednesday.
Four Gorloks played the full 110 minutes, while a total of 19 players saw action for Webster.
The Gorloks finished with a 24-17 advantage in shots, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. In the two overtime periods, Webster outshot IWU, 5-3. The Gorloks also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Freshman forward
Mark Moore (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) led the Gorloks with four shots, including three shots on goal, while junior midfielder
Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood-Richmond Heights), junior forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove), freshman midfielder
Noah Abraham (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) and junior midfielder
Matt Huster (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) each had two shots in the match.
For the match, 11 different Gorloks took a shot as the 24 shots were the most in match for the Gorloks since taking 26 shots during the 2019 campaign at Blackburn.
In the opening 45 minutes, the two teams combined for 13 shots and the Gorloks had the lone two shots on goal thanks to Abraham in the 19th minute and Moore in the 25th minute.
Webster would then outshoot the Tigers, 12-8 in the second half, but IWU would put five of those shots on goal as opposed to three by Webster.
In the first overtime period, sophomore forward
Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) put a shot on goal late in the 95th minute, but IWU goalkeeper Vicent Sanchis would make a save on the play to keep the match scoreless.
Both teams took two shots in the second overtime period and the Gorloks had a chance to win the game just one second into the 109th minute, but a shot by Moore was saved by Sanchis.
Junior
Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) came up big in the goal for the Gorloks as he played all 110 minutes and recorded five saves, all of which came in the second period, to post his third shutout of the season. With the tie, Coffey is now 3-0-1 on the season.
Sanchis (1-0-2) recorded seven saves in goal for the Tigers in his 110 minutes of action.
Xavier Lozada and Geovannt Pacheco each had four shots for Iowa Wesleyan, while Francisco Saldana added three shots and put two of those shots on goal.
The match was a physical contest as IWU was called for 19 fouls and Jarryd Stone was given a yellow card midway through the 60th minute.
Webster will continue its road slate for a trip to Greenville, Ill., on Saturday, March 27 to take on Greenville in a 3 p.m. SLIAC match. The Gorloks opened league play at home on March 10 with a 4-0 shutout win against the Panthers.
