GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's soccer team made two first-half goals hold up here Saturday as the Gorloks picked up a 2-0 shutout win over Greenville University in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Francis Field.
Saturday's shutout was the fifth of the season for the Gorloks and its fourth in five SLIAC matches as Webster improved to 5-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the in the league. Greenville fell to 1-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the league.
For the match, Webster outshot the Panthers, 16-15 and had a 9-3 edge in shots on goal in the match. The Gorloks have now outshot all seven of their opponents this season.
The Gorloks got into the scoring column just 11-plus minutes into the match as sophomore forward
Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) scored a goal off an assist from junior midfielder
Henok Moges (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North). The goal was the second of the season for Gabriele.
Webster pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 37th minute as freshman forward
Mark Moore (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) added his second goal of the season as he took a pass from junior defender
Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and connected from inside the box.
Late in the 38th minute, freshman midfielder/forward
James Carr (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) had to chance to make 3-0, but Greenville goalkeeper Gerardo Lopez made one his seven saves on the night.
Webster senior goalkeeper
Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) kept the Panther off the scoreboard early in the second half as he made a save inside the box from Jared McPeek. In the 71st minute, McPeek had a shot hot the post and in the 72nd minute he had a shot blocked.
Amick (2-1-0) on the season posted the shutout in goal as he recorded three saves, including two in the second half. The shutout by Amick was his second of the season and the 16th of his career, which is second most in school history.
Freshman midfielder
Carlos Llamas (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) took five shots and put three shots on goal, while Moore added three shots and sophomore midfielder
Colby Kapp (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) took two shots.
The Panthers held junior forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) without a shot for the first time this season as he entered the match having taken a team leading 22 shots for the Gorloks.
McPeek took four of Greenville's 15 shots, while Claudio Trevino and Urquidi Napoleon each had two shots in the loss.
Lopez (1-2-1) took the loss in goal for Greenville as he allowed two goals and made seven saves.
Greenville held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
The game was physical as the teams combined for 45 fouls and a total of five yellow cards were handed out, including four by Greenville. The Panthers had 26 fouls and Webster committed 19 fouls.
Webster will look to win its second straight match as they return home to host Blackburn College in a 7:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, March 30 at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
