Women's Shuts Out Illinois College, Moves to 2-3 On Season

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Webster University women's tennis team won its second consecutive match here Friday evening as the Gorloks posted a 9-0 shutout victory over Illinois College at the Bellatti Tennis Complex.

The 9-0 shutout win was the first this season for the Gorloks and the first for Webster since earning a 9-0 win last season during its Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., against Cairn University.

With the win, Webster improves to 2-3 on the season, while Illinois College fall to 1-7 on the year.

Webster got off to a strong start in Friday's match as they won all three doubles matches for the second consecutive match and they dropped just four games in three doubles matches against the Lady Blues. Webster won two of the matches by identical 8-0 scores and won the other match by a score of 8-4.

In doubles, Webster's No. 1 team of sophomore Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and senior Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) improved to 4-1 on the season following its 8-4 win over IC's No. 1 team of Kalisa Goertz and Sophia Roth. Brezovar and Federhofer have won three straight doubles matches.

Sophomore Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) and junior Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) won their second straight match at No. 2 doubles as they shutout Mikhayla Haloftis and Maggie Dooley, 8-0, while the No. 3 team of sophomore Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and sophomore Emily Casey (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) played their first match together at No. 3 doubles as they won 8-0 over Christina Meyn and Elizabeth Ruvalcaba.

Leading 3-0 in the match, Webster and the Lady Blues turned their attention to singles play and much like doubles, Webster was dominant in singles as they lost just 18 games over the 12 sets played, including posting a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles by Armstrong, who is now 1-1 in singles on the season.

Casey lost just one game in two sets as she won 6-0, 6-1 over Meyn at the No. 5 singles spot. Casey is now 2-1 on the season in singles.

Brezovar improved to 2-3 on the season in No. 1 singles as she earned a 6-1, 6-4 win on Friday over Roth.

Serbentas posted a straight set win of 7-5, 6-2 over Goertz at the No. 2 singles spot and improved it record to 2-2 on the year.

Ferguson won her second straight match as on Friday she won at No. 3 singles over Haloftis, 6-1, 6-0 and freshman Bailey Higgins (Jefferson Cty, Mo./Jefferson City) collected her third straight win in singles as she defeated Dooley at No. 4 singles by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores.

The Gorloks will look to even its record at .500 on the season in a little more than 12 hours as they travel to Decatur, Ill., for an 11 a.m. match at Millikin University.
