FENTON, Mo. - Webster University opened the home portion of its 2021 season here Saturday afternoon by taking 13 shots and scoring four goals en route to posting a 4-1 victory in non-conference action against Fontbonne University on Field 5 at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
With the win, Webster improved to 2-0 on the season with both of the wins coming against Fontbonne, while Fontbonne fell to 1-2 on the season.
In the match, Webster outshot Fontbonne, 13-2, including an 8-2 edge in shots in the first half.Â
Junior forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) took four shots and put three shots on the goal in the win, while freshman midfielder
Noah Abraham (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwod West) and senior midfielder
Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe) each had two shots.Â
Ten of Webster's 13 shots were on goal in the match.Â
Webster wasted little time in scoring in Saturday's home opener as sophomore forward
Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) took a pass from junior midfielder
Henok Moges (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) and scored a goal just 73 seconds into the contest.Â
In the ninth minute, Fontbonne tied the game as Charles Gibbs put a header into the goal off a pass from Tanner Harris.Â
With the score tied at 1-all, neither team would be able to break up the tie until Webster scored on goal from sophomore midfielder
Tavis Cameron (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) that came off an assist from Abraham.
The Gorloks lead grew to 3-1 in the just a second into the 64th minute as Olaso scored an unassisted goal.Â
About 12 minutes later, freshman midfielder
Carlos Llamas (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) got into the scoring column as he took a pass from Gabriele and would find the net to give Webster a 4-1 advantage.Â
Webster's defense was tremendous in the second half as they held the Griffins without a shot.Â
The Gorloks also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks and both teams commited 10 fouls.Â
Gibbs and Jared Lyeki took Fontbonne's shots in the match.
Junior goalkeeper
Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) would play solid in the goal again as he recorded his second consecutive shutout as he allowed one goal and made one save in 90 minutes of action.
The Griffins played two goalkeepers in the match as Ethan Cowell started and played the first 37-plus minutes and allowed two goals and made two saves, while Blake HInerman had four saves and allowed two goals in 52-plus minutes of action.Â
Webster will open the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of its 2021 season this coming Wednesday, March 10 as they host Greenville for a 7:30 p.m. match on the stadium field at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.Â
