Baseball Sweeps Home Doubleheader Sunday Against Benedictine

A.J. Smith Homer in Ninth Inning of Nightcap Forces Extra Innings

SAUGET, Ill. - The No. 3-ranked Webster Baseball team played its first doubleheader of the 2021 season here Sunday afternoon as the Gorloks swept both ends of a twinbill against Benedictine University at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Webster opened Sunday's doubleheader by posting a 3-1 win in the first game, before scoring a run from second base on an error in the bottom of the 12th inning to post a 7-6 win in the nightcap.

With the sweep, Webster improves 4-1 overall on the season, while Benedictine, who opened its season with a 7-2 loss to Wartburg at GCS Ballpark, fell to 0-3 on the year.

For the doubleheader, Webster's offense recorded a total of 17 hits, including fifth-year senior designated hitter A.J. Smith (DuQuoin, Ill./DuQuion) recording four of those hits, including a game-tying two-out solo home run in the nightcap to send the game into extra innings. In addition to Smith, graduate student first baseman Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) and third-year sophomore second baseman Mitch Daniels (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) each had three hits, while second-year freshman Landon Vahle (Lee's Summit, Mo./St. Michael Archangel) and freshman catcher R.J. LaRocco (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) both had two hits, including LaRocco drilling a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth the first game.

Along with its offensive output, the Gorloks also got two strong starting pitching performances as second-year freshman Jordan Smevoll (Dyer, Ind./Marian Catholic) pitched 5.2 innings and allowed six hits and one run, while walking one and striking out five in the opener and then freshman J.T. Miller (Centennial, Colo./Regis Jesuit), who made his collegiate debut in the nightcap, tossed 6.2 innings and allowed four hits and one unearned run, while walking one and striking out four.

Benedictine committed six errors in the two games as they had three each in both games, while Webster recorded three errors in the nightcap.

Both teams struggled with runners on base in the doubleheader as both teams combined to leave 45 runners on base as Webster stranded 19 and Benedictine left 26 on base, including both teams combining for 27 runners left on base in the nightcap.

Game 1: No. 3 Webster 3, Benedictine 1
Making just his second career start, Smevoll was once again strong on the mound as after tossing five innings last Sunday in his first career start against Wartburg, he pitched into the sixth inning and recorded five strikeouts and walked one to earn the victory and allowed his only run on a two-out, solo home run off the bat of Kevin Bushnell in the sixth inning.

The Eagles would put two runners on base in the second inning against Smevoll thanks to singles by Bushnell and Cameron Falk, but the 6-foot letthander would get out of the jam by forcing Ryan Doubek to ground out to first.

Webster would come back in the bottom of the second and used two hits and an error to score two runs on a fielder's choice RBI by fourth-year junior shortstop Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augustine) and a sacrifice bunt from graduate student centerfielder Aron Hopp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln College).

In the sixth, Benedictine scored its first run of the game as Bushnell drilled a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right center to cut Webster's lead to 2-1 and after Logan Shepard followed with a double, the Gorloks replaced Smevoll with fourth-year junior Jake Anderson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook), who would pitch two shutout innings out of the bullpen as he allowed two hits, while walking one and striking out five of the nine hitters he faced.

The Gorloks would use a single and stolen base by Kent to put a runner on second with two outs, but Benedictine starter Stephen Sewruk left Kent stranded when Vahle flew out to right to end the inning.

Benedictine once again threatened in the eighth as they loaded the bases after two outs thanks to two walks and a bunt single by Shepard, but fourth-year junior Sean Beaver (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch), who was making his season debut, would get out the jam by forcing Falk to fly out to Hopp in center.

After the Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, but couldn't score, the Gorloks would add an insurance run when LaRocco drilled the first pitch he saw from Benedictine reliever Ryan Litzvecz over the wall in left for his first career home run. The homer gave Webster a 3-1 lead. After Litzvecz retired the next two Gorloks in order, he would allow a single to Smith, but Smith would later be thrown out trying to steal.

In the ninth, the Eagles put a runner on base off of Beaver on a one-out infield single and the Gorloks summoned freshman Alek Elges (Littleton, Colo./J.K. Mullen) into the game and after walking the first batter he faced to put runners on first and second, Elges would retire the next two Eagles in order to preserve his first career save. Elges pitched two-thirds of an inning and walked one.

Smith had two of Webster's six hits in the opener.

Bushnell, Shepard and Kyle Mitter had two hits apiece for the Eagles, who outhit the Gorloks, 9-6.

Sewruk (0-1) pitched seven innings in his season debut as he allowed four hits and two runs (one earned), while walking one and striking out three.

Game 2: #3 Webster 7, Benedictine 6 (12 innings)
In the nightcap, the Gorloks were just one out away from a 5-1 win in the top of the ninth inning when Benedictine would put its next eight hitters on bases thanks to four hits, two hit batsman and two walks off of four Gorlok pitchers to take a 6-5 lead. The big hits in the inning was a 2-run ground rule double to right center by Damen Castillo and a two-run infield single by Brenden Norberg off of fourth-year junior pitcher Andrew Padilla (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) that gave the Eagles the lead.

Trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Litavecz would relieve Jackson Bahn and after retiring the first two Gorloks in order, Smith hit a 2-0 pitch over the fence in right to tie the game and force extra innings.

Webster had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 11th as Smith recorded a two-out double to left center and after Vahle was intentionally walked, Simon Herold would get out of the jam by striking out Elges looking to end the inning.

After second-year senioor Bryce Meyer (Bartonville, Ill./Carl Sandburg) completed his third inning of work by pitching a perfect 12th inning, the Gorloks would finally break through in the bottom of the 12th to earn the win.

In the bottom of the 12th, Hopp walked with one out, moved to second on a bunt by second-year junior Adam Lovell (Lafayette, Ind./Saint Joseph's College) and the next hitter, LaRocco, would hit a hard shot at Benedictine second baseman Frankie Morales and on the play, Morales would boot the ball into shallow right field and that allowed Hopp to score the winning run.

Meyer (1-0) pitched three innings and allowed one hit and no runs, while walking one and fanning four in his 36 pitch outing.

It looked early on that the Gorloks wouldn't need LaRocco's heroics in the 12th inning as they jumped in front 3-0 in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a hit. In the inning, Lovell and LaRocco walked to open the frame and after fourth-year junior All-American third baseman Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Kent would hit a ground ball to first for an out, but Lovell would score the first run. The next hitter, Smith, brought home the second run on his fielder's choice grounder and as Smith was stealing second, Benedictine catcher Jack Surin was trying to pick off Swords at third, but his throw went back third base and allowed Swords to score the third run of the inning.

The Eagles would load the bases in the top of the fifth off of Miller, but the freshman right-hander would get out of the jam by retiring the final two batters of the inning in order.

Webster would add two runs in the bottom of fifth thanks to an RBI single by Kent and an RBI ground out by Vahle off of Benedictine reliever Justin Sosa, who replaced starting hurler Rob Dudzinski in the fourth inning.

Benedictine would get on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh as Norberg led off with a double, would move to third on a fly out to right center and scored when Anthony Lenza reached on a throwing error by freshman Bo Slaymaker (Johnstown, Colo./Roosevelt) at second base.

Following the error, Miller was replaced by second-year senior Cooper Hake (Lincoln, Ill./IU-South Bend) and Hake would allow a double to left by Mitter, but got out of the jam by forcing Jack Feeley to ground out.

The Eagles would put two more runners on base in the eighth, but would leave those runners stranded when senior Ben Kowalski (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) relieved Hake and retired the two batters he faced to end the inning.

Kent, Smith and Daniels each had two hits in the nightcap for the Gorloks as eight different Webster players had a hit. Lovell and Swords scored two runs apiece.

Benedictine, who had 12 hits in the nightcap, was paced by a 3-for-5 day at the plate by Castillo, while Mitter, Surin, Bushnell and Norberg each had two hits.

The nightcap featured six extra-base hits, including four doubles from Benedictine and a double and homer by Smith for the Gorloks.

Both teams had three errors in the nightcap.

The Gorloks will return to action next weekend as they open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a four-game series against Westminster (Mo.) College at GCS Ballpark. The series begins with a doubleheader on March 12 at 12 p.m. and will conclude with another doubleheader on March 13 at 12 p.m.
