CLAYTON, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team continued its strong play in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action here Saturday evening as they scored three goals en route to posting its sixth shutout of the 2020-21 season with a 3-0 win against Fontbonne University at Centene Stadium.
With the win, Webster improved to 7-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the league and remains atop the league standings with one week remaining in the regular season, while Fontbonne fell to 5-7-0 overall and 4-5-0 in the SLIAC.
In Saturday's win, Webster held a 13-7 edge in shots, including a 3-2 advantage in shots in goal in posting its fifth shutout in seven of its league matches. Seven of Webster's 13 shots came from junior midfielder
Henok Moges (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) and freshman forward
Mark Moore (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) as Moges took four shots and Moore had three shots and two shots on goal in the win.Â
Webster scored its goal in the 31st minutes as junior forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) scored on a header off a cross from Moore to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The goal was Murvin's team-leading seventh of his career and 24th of his career, which is fifth most in school history.
The Gorloks lead grew to 2-0 late in the 64th minute as they scored their own goal by the Griffins and Moore got into the scoring action in the 68th minute as he scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Moges. Moore is now one of three Gorloks to score at least three goals this season.
Webster's 3-0 lead was more than enough of a cushion for junior goalkeeper
Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) to post his fourth shutout of the season as he recorded two saves in the win. Coffey moved to 4-0-1 on the season with the win.
Charles Gibbs took two of Fontbonne's seven shots on the night.
Ethan Cowell (3-6-0) took the loss in goal for the Griffins as he allowed three goals and recorded two saves.Â
Webster also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks and each team had eight fouls on the night.
The Gorloks will return to action on Wednesday, April 14 as they travel to Fulton, Mo., for a 7:30 p.m. SLIAC match against Westminster (Mo.) College.
