ELSAH, Ill. - Webster University women's tennis improved to 2-0 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play here Tuesday as the Gorloks downed Principia College, 7-0, at the Principia College Outdoor Courts.
With the victory, Webster extended its win streak to four straight matches and improves its record to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the league, while Principia fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.Â
For the match, Webster lost a total of 14 games across the nine matches that were played, including winning three of the six singles matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.Â
Webster opened Tuesday's match with the Panthers by sweeping all three doubles matches for the fifth time this season.Â
The Gorloks first win in doubles came at the No. 3 spot as freshman
Bailey Higgins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and sophomore
Emily Casey (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) won 8-1 over Principia's Emma Hanser and Victorie de Visme.
Sophomore
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and senior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) improved to 8-2 on the season at No. 1 doubles after their 8-2 win over Kelsie Huss and Caroline Carlson to give Webster its second point of the match.
Webster swept the doubles point after junior
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) and sophomore
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) won 8-2 over Paige Lesko and Hannah Switzer. Serbentas and Ferguson have now won six straight matches and are 7-1 on the season.
Leading 3-0 in the match after doubles, Webster would post straight-set wins at all six singles spots in the line-up, including picking up those double bagel wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.Â
The Gorloks earned its first point in singles at the No. 2 spot as Serbentas improved to 4-4 on the year after winning 6-0, 6-0 over Carlson and then they sealed the win with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles by Higgins, who is now 6-3 on the season in singles.Â
Ferguson won win by 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to give Webster its third singles point and then Federhofer posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot. With the win, Federhofer improved to 4-5 on the season and won her fourth consecutive match.Â
Brezovar gave the Gorloks their eighth point of the match after her 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Huss. Brezovar improved to 5-4 on the season and has now won three straight matches at the No. 1 singles spot.Â
The Gorloks would complete the sweep following a win at No. 6 singles by senior
Lauren Denny (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell) over Hanser as Denny won 6-3, 6-2. Denny is now 2-1 on the season in singles action.Â
Webster will look to make its five straight wins this coming Friday, April 16 as they travel to Greenville, Ill., for a 3 p.m. at Greenville University.
