GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University women's tennis team concluded regular season St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play here Friday at the Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex with a 6-3 victory over Greenville University.
With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to five consecutive wins and improves its record to 7-4 overall and finishes SLIAC play with a perfect 3-0 record. Greenville falls to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the SLIAC.
Friday's win also helped the Gorloks seal the regular season league title and earn the No. 1 seed in next Friday's SLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament, which will be held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. It marks the fourth time in the last six seasons that Webster won the regular season and earned the No. 1 seed in the SLIAC Tournament.
The match was a very competitive affair as three of the six singles matches were forced into third sets.
Webster opened Friday's match by winning two of the three doubles matches to hold a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Gorloks first win in doubles came at the No. 3 spot as junior
Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and freshman
Bailey Higgins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) won 8-1 over Emily Buratovich and Noelle Beans to improve their record to 3-3 on the season.
Webster's second point in the match came at No. 1 doubles as junior
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and senior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) continued its strong season with an 8-1 win over Mirela Birosta and Addison Brannon. Brezovar and Federhofer won their third straight doubles match and improved its record to 9-2 on the season.
Greenville would prevent a Webster sweep of the doubles point as Shaling Reynolds and Claudia Principal defeated Webster's No. 2 doubles team of junior
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) and sophomore
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County), 8-6. The loss by Ferguson and Serbentas was just their second of the season as they are 7-2 on the year in doubles.
With a 2-1 advantage in the match, WU and Greenville faced off in singles competition. The Gorloks struck first in singles as Higgins won at the No. 5 spot over Buratovich, 6-0, 6-3. The freshman improved to 7-3 on the win with the win and has now won four straight matches.
Brezovar gave Webster a 4-1 lead in the match as she needed a third set to post her sixth win of the season at No. 1 singles as she defeated Birosta, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1. The win was the fourth consecutive for the Wisconsin native.
Greenville would win its first point in singles at the No. 2 spot as Brannon defeated Serbentas, 6-4, 7-5 to drop Webster's lead to 4-2. The loss dropped Serbentas to 4-5 in singles on the year.
Samantha Siefken gave Greenville their second win in singles as she posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over sophomore
Emily Casey (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) at the No. 6 singles spot to pull within 4-3.
Ferguson, though, would cap Webster's victory as she collected a hard-fought three set win over Principal at No. 4 singles as Ferguson lost the first set, 6-6-7 (5), before winning the second set, 6-3 and then posting a 6-2 win in the third set to give Webster a 5-3 lead.
The final match of the day went to Federhofer as she moved to 5-5 on the year following her third set win at No. 3 singles over Reynolds. Federhofer won the first set, 6-0, before falling 5-7 in the second set and then winning 7-6 (2) in the third and final set.
Webster will return to action on Saturday, April 17 as they travel to Troy, Ill., for a 12 p.m. non-conference match at Triad High School against NCAA Division II foe, McKendree University.
