TROY, Ill. - Webster women's tennis suffered a 5-2 setback here Saturday afternoon to NCAA Division II foe McKendree University in a non-conference match at Triad High School.
With the setback, Webster had its five-game win streak snapped and drops its record to 7-5 overall on the season, while McKendree improved to 6-5 on the year.
Saturday's match was played using Division II rules as the three doubles match counted as one point with a team needing to win two of three doubles matches to earn the point.
McKendree opened Saturday's match by taking two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point as the Bearcats won by identical 6-0 scores at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and senior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) suffered just their third loss of the season in doubles as they are 9-3 on the year.Â
Webster, though, prevented a sweep in doubles by McKendree as junior
Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCleur North) teamed with freshman
Bailey Higgins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) to post a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles over McKendree's duo of Bailey Grigg and Anna Marison. Armstrong and Higgins improved to 4-3 in the doubles on the season.Â
Leading the match 1-0 after doubles, the two teams turned their focus to singles play as Webster won just two of the six matches as the Bearcats would collect the match win.Â
In singles action, Brezovar won her fifth consecutive match at the No. 1 spot as she won on Saturday after Mariana Caidedo Mora was forced to retire due to an injury trailing 2- 0 in the second set with Brezovar about to take a 3-0 lead. Caidedo Mora won the first set, 6-4.Â
Webster's other singles win came at the No. 6 spot as sophomore
Emily Casey (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) defeated McKendree's Anna Marison, 6-2, 6-1 for her third win this season to improve to 3-3 overall in singles.Â
Armstrong battled hard at No. 5 singles against Grigg, but would fall short, 6-3, 7-5, while sophomore
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles over Camilla Fonseca.Â
McKendree's other two wins in singles came by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.Â
The Gorloks will continue its 2021Â regular season on Sunday, April 18 with a 1 p.m. match in Oakland City, Ind., against Oakland City University.
