GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's tennis team concluded its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule here Friday evening by suffering an 8-1 setback to Greenville University at the Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex.
With the setback, Webster drops its record to 4-8-1 overall and 1-2 in the SLIAC, while Greenville improved to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the SLIAC. With the completion of its SLIAC schedule, the Gorloks will more than likely earn the No. 3 seed in next Saturday's SLIAC Men's Tournament, which is scheduled to be held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center at Forest Park.
Friday's match came less than 24 hours after Webster suffered a 9-0 loss on Thursday at Principia.
Greenville opened Friday's action by sweeping all three doubles matches as the Gorloks won a total of seven games in the three doubles matches.Â
Leading 3-0 in the match, the two teams turned their focus to singles and in singles, Webster struggled as they won a total of 22 games, with 12 of those game wins coming in its only singles win at the No. 1 spot.Â
Webster's lone point in the match came at No. 1 singles as fifth-year senior
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) improved to 8-5 on the season following his 6-0, 6-3 win over Austin Burkhart. The singles win was also Muren's 38th of his career and those 38 singles wins are third on the school's career chart and is five shy of the school career mark of 43, which was set by Ricky Eaves from 2010-13.Â
Two other singles matches were competitive on Friday as freshman
Matthew Birchmeier (Swartz Creek, Mich./Flushing) fell 6-2, 6-2 to Greenville's Matthew Rodriguez at No. 3 singles, while sophomore
Parker Schaefer (Barnhart, Mo./Windsor) fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to Matt Lehr.Â
Greenville won at No. 2 and No. 4 singles by identical double bagel scores of 6-0, 6-0, while junior
Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to Thibaut Tignee.Â
Webster will return to action on Saturday, April 17 as they travel to Triad High School in Troy, Ill., for a 12 p.m. match against NCAA Division II foe, McKendree University.
