Goodman Named SLIAC Baseball Hitter of the Week

BELLEVILLE, Ill. - For the first time in his collegiate career, Webster University third-year sophomore catcher Zach Goodman (Greenwood Village, Colo./Arapahoe) took home the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week honor as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

With his honor, Goodman becomes the third different Gorlok player to earn Player of the Week honors this season in baseball as fifth-year senior All-American pitcher Matt Mulhearn has been named the SLIAC Pitcher of the Week four times this season, while fifth-year senior All-American first baseman Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) took home SLIAC Hitter of the Week honors on March 29.

Goodman earns this week's Diamond Sports/SLIAC Baseball Hitter of the Week accolade after recording a .583 batting average and a .917 slugging percentage in helping lead the No. 2 ranked Gorloks to a four-game series sweep at Greenville. In the series against the Panthers, Goodman had at least one hit in all four games, including a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI in a 6-4 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. For the week, Goodman recorded seven hits, scored three runs, had 7 RBI, hit one double, had a home run in 12 at-bats. Additionally, he walked twice and was hit by two pitches and was 1-for-2 on stolen bases.

On the season, Goodman is hitting .394 with 13 hits in 33 at-bats and he has scored six runs, while hitting two doubles, one home run and has had 12 RBI. In addition, he has walked three times, been hit by three pitches and has a .545 slugging percentage and a .463 on-base percentage. He has also had seven assists on defense behind the plate and has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

Meanwhile, the league named Fontbonne senior Luke Summers as the Diamond Sports/SLIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Summers earns this week's Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing a complete game shutout win over Westminster. Against the Blue Jays, Summers pitched all nine innings and allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out nine. Those nine strikeouts pushed his career total to 343, which helps him become the all-time strikeout leader in SLIAC history.

Goodman and the nationally second and fourth-ranked Gorloks (23-5 overall, 18-2 SLIAC) will return to action this coming weekend (April 24-25) as they host Fontbonne for a key four-game SLIAC series at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, before concluding the series on Sunday, April 25 with another doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Prior to Sunday's game, the Gorloks will celebrate Senior Day.
