FENTON, Mo. - The Webster women's soccer team began its quest for a record 13th St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship here Monday evening by posting a 6-0 shutout victory over seventh-seeded Eureka College in the quarterfinal round of the 2020-21 SLIAC Tournament at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to three straight and improves its record to 7-3 overall, while Eureka closes its season with a 2-7 record. In addition, the quarterfinal win improved the Gorloks record to 21-6-3 all-time in the SLIAC Tournament and advanced Webster to a semifinal match-up at home on Wednesday, April 21 against No. 3 seeded Westminster, who picked up a 4-0 win Monday at home over sixth-seeded Iowa Wesleyan.
Monday's SLIAC Tournament win over Eureka came two days after the Gorloks concluded the regular season with a 6-0 home win over the Red Devils on Senior Day.
In Monday's SLIAC Tournament quarterfinal match, the Gorloks offense recorded 44 shots as they 20 shots in the first half and 24 shots in the second half and they scored three goals in each half to win its third consecutive SLIAC Tournament match.
The Gorloks also put 24 shots on goal as they had 13 in the first half and 11 in the second half.
Junior forward Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) led the way with six shots and five shots on goal, while senior midfielder Payton Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) and sophomore defender Reaghan Young (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) each had five shots and three shots on goal apiece.
Along with her six shots, Lande tallied five points in the match as she scored two goals and had an assist and it marked her second straight two goal match as she also scored two goals in Saturday's season finale win over Eureka.
The Gorloks got the scoring started in Monday's match with a goal late in the 12th minute as sophomore forward Mackenzie O'Neal (Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) took a pass from freshman forward Jennifer Munger (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) and scored on a shot in the box. The goal was the second of the year for O'Neal.
Lande would tally her first goal early in the 31st minute as she took a pass from freshman Trinity Nail (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) and scored from inside the box to give Webster a 2-0 lead. The assist was the first career point for Nail.
Junior midfielder Cate Ciske (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) scored her career collegiate goal as she took a pass from midfield from Nail and scored from about 20 yards out to make the score 3-0 in Webster favor at the half.
Williams would get into the scoring in the 67th minute as she took a pass from Lande and scored her fifth goal of the season. The assist by Lande was her second of the year.
Freshman midfielder Angie Calabrese (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills) took a pass from freshman midfielder Abbey Poe (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) and scored from just outside the box in the 68th minute to give the Gorloks a 5-0 lead
Lande would complete scoring about 22 seconds after Calabrese's goal, she took a pass from Williams and scored from the middle of box to make the score 6-0. Lande's goal was her team-leading seventh of the season and over the past two seasons, she has scored 25 goals as she tallied 18 goals as a sophomore in 2019.
While Webster's offense took 44 shots and put 24 shots on goal, the Gorloks defense held Eureka to just one shot, which came from Olivia Falls in the 36th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East) played the first 45 minutes and earned the win to move to 4-2-0 overall on the season as she didn't face a shot or make a save. Freshman Heather Jones (Bradenton, Fla./Florida Collegiate) played the second half and also didn't face a shot.
Webster also held an 18-0 edge in corner kicks and were whistled for five offsides calls.
Eureka goalkeeper Abby Swope (1-5-0) took the loss in net for the Red Devils as she allowed six goals and made 18 saves, including 10 saves in the first half.
