Men's Soccer Scores Seven Goals in SLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal Win Over Principia, Faces Fontbonne in Thursday's Semifinals

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University showed its offensive firepower here Tuesday evening in the quarterfinal round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament as the top-seeded and regular season champion Gorloks scored seven goals enroute to a 7-0 shutout victory over eighth-seeded Principia College at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

With the victory, Webster improves its record to 10-1-1 overall and advances to 7:30 p.m. semifinal meeting on Thursday at World Wide Technology Soccer Park against seventh-seeded Fontbonne University, who earned a 1-0 upset win Tuesday at No. 2 seeded Iowa Wesleyan. Principia, who were the defending SLIAC Tournament champions as they claimed the tournament title in 2019, closes the 2020-21 season with a 3-8-0 record. 

Tuesday's win also extended Webster's win streak to six straight matches and also snapped a four match losing streak for the Gorloks in the SLIAC Tournament since picking up a 4-2 win in the semifinals of the 2015 tournament against Greenville. 

The seven goals were the most scored by the Gorloks in the SLIAC Tournament in the program's history and bettered the old mark of four goals against Greenville in the semifinals of the 2015 SLIAC Tournament and the most goals scored in a men's SLIAC Tournament match since MacMurray scored 10 goals in a 10-0 win in the first round of the 1997 tournament. 

Along with scoring seven goals, which is tied for the second most goals on the season for the Gorloks, Webster also outshot the Panthers, 29-8 and also held a 16-3 edge in shots on goal. The 29 shots are third most on the season. 

Sophomore forward Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and freshman forward Mark Moore (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) each took five shots and. combined for five shots on goal, while freshman midfielder Carlos Llamas (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) took three shot and put two of those shots on goal. On the night, 14 different Gorloks took at least on shot as they had 14 shots in the first half and 15 shots in the second half.

Moore got the scoring started for the Gorloks in the 27th minute as he connected with his left foot off the goalie to give Webster a 1-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Noah Abraham (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) assisted on Moore's goal.

Abraham would get into the scoring act in the 34th minute as he took a pass from Moore and scored from seven yards out into the bottom left corner of the goal. 

Junior midfielder Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) took a touch and go pass from Moore and found the goal from three yards out to give Webster a 3-0 lead in the 37th minute. 

Kohler added a second goal in the 58th minute as he took a pass from junior midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood-Richmond Heights) and connected for a goal in the lower right gave Webster a 4-0 lead. The two goal game by Kohler was the second of his career.

Llamas added a goal less than two minutes later as he took a pass from Pearson and connected with his right foot from about 10 yards out to give the Gorloks a 5-0 lead. 

Sophomore midfelder Matt Huster (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) got into the scoring column late in the 79th minute as he took a pass from Abraham, who finished with two assists, and connected from about 5 yards out to make the score 6-0 in favor of the home team.

Sophomore midfielder Colby Kapp (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) capped the scoring in the 82nd minute as he took a pass from freshman midfielder James Carr (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) and scored from the middle of the box. 

Kohler had four points with his two goals, while Moore and Abraham each tallied three points and Pearson had two points thanks to his two assists. 

Patrick Sherman and Cole Heinbaugh each took three shots in the match, while Sherman recorded two of Principia's three shots on goal. 

Junior Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) got the start in goal for the Gorloks as he played all 90 minutes and made three saves to record his fifth shutout of the season and improve his record to 5-0-1 on the year. The shutout win was the eighth of the season for the Gorloks.

Elias Simpson (3-7-0) took hte loss in the net for Principia as he allowed seven goals and made nine saves, including seven saves in the first half.

Webster also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, including five of those coming in the first half.

Along with Webster's semifinal match on Thursday, April 22, the other semifinal match will feature No. 3 seeded Spalding hosting No. 4 seeded Westminster in Louisville, Ky. The semifinal winners will meet in the SLIAC Tournament championship game on Saturday, April 24 at the site of the highest remaining seeded team.
