Baseball Scores Eight Runs in Seventh inning, Sweeps Senior Day Home Doubleheader From Fontbonne

SAUGET, Ill. - After scoring eight runs off of four hits, eight walks and five hit batsmen in an 8-1 win in the first game of Sunday's Senior Day doubleheader against Fontbonne University, the Gorloks scored eight runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 9-2 win in the nightcap to complete a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over the Griffins at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. The two teams will conclude the four game series with another doubleheader on Monday, April 26 beginning at 3 p.m.

With the victory in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader, No. 2/No. 4 ranked Webster improved its record to 25-5 overall and 20-2 in the SLIAC and extends its win streak to seven consecutive games overall and 11 consecutive wins in SLIAC play. Fontbonne fell to 17-11 overall and 14-4 in the league.

After the teams aces, Webster fifth-year senior All-American Matt Mulhearn (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) and Fontbonne senior Luke Summers went head-to-head in the first game, Sunday's second game turned into a pitcher's duel early on between second-year freshman Jordan Smevoll (Dyer, Ind./Marian Catholic) and Fontbonne's Ryan Howell.

Through the first five innings, Smevoll and Howell had allowed a total of three runs and had combined for nine hits, while striking out 10, walking five and hitting one.

For the game, Smevoll earned a no-decision after pitching six innings and allowed six hits and two runs, while walking two and striking out seven in his 96 pitch outing, while Howell (4-3) pitched into the seventh inning and allowed seven hits and six runs, while walking five, striking out three and hitting one.

The Griffins got on the scoreboard first in the second game as they used three hits to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead in the second inning off of Smevoll.

Webster would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning was they used singles by fourth-year junior All-American third baseman Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) and fifth-year senior All-American first baseman Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro), a walk to fifth-year senior designated hitter A.J. Smith (DuQuoin, Ill./DuQuoin) and a wild pitch by Howell to score a run and pull within 2-1.

The Gorloks offense would explode in the bottom of the seventh as they sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored eight runs on six hits, two Fontbonne errors and two walks. The big hits in the inning were a bases loaded triple by Swords, who also scored on a error on the play and then Kent followed with his second home run of the doubleheader and third homer of the year.

Webster's eight run seventh would help make a winner out of freshman Alek Elges (Littleton, Colo./J.K. Mullen) as he pitched the seventh and retired the Griffins in order after taking over Smevoll after he allowed a lead-off ground ruled double to Grant Staffen.

Elges (3-1) would record one strikeout in the seventh and then senior Bryce Meyer (Bartonville, Ill./Cal Sandburg College) would pitch the final two innings and allowed one hit, walked one and struck out three.

Swords and Kent combined to go 4-for-8 at the plate with three runs scored and 4 RBI as Webster had 10 hits in the second game.

Trey Kuper paced Fontbonne with two of their seven hits.

The Griffins committed three errors and turned two double-plays, while the two teams stranded a combined 13 runners as Fontbonne stranded seven and Webster left six.

Webster and Fontbonne will conclude the four-game SLIAC series with another doubleheader on Monday, April 26 beginning with a seven inning game at 3 p.m., before concluding the series with a nine game beginning 30-40 minutes after completion of the first game.
