Softball Splits Doubleheader Tuesday at Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster softball team saw its four-game win streak snapped here Tuesday as the Gorloks split a non-conference doubleheader against Greenville University at Panther Field.

Webster opened the doubleheader with an 8-4 win, before falling 2-1 in the nightcap.

With the doubleheader split, Webster falls to 8-4 on the season, while Greenville moves to 6-13 on the season.

In the opener, the Gorloks offense recorded 10 hits and they scored three runs in both the second and fourth innings and added two runs in the third inning.

Fifth-year senior centerfielder Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) and junior second baseman Taylor Jackson (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin) each had two hits as they combined to go 4-for-7 at the plate with four runs scored and 4 RBI, with three of those RBI coming from a 3-run homer by Burroughs in the fourth inning to give the Gorloks an 8-3 lead.

Greenville would get on the scoreboard in the opener as they used an error on a dropped fly ball in left by freshman Reese Waggoner (Centennial, Colo./Eaglecrest) and an RBI single by Hannah Hoffmann off of senior pitcher Kirbie Mendenhall (Robinson, Ill./Parkland College), who got the start in the circle in the opener.

The Gorloks would take the lead in the top of the second as they used one hit and four errors by the Panthers to score three unearned runs off of Maegan Stone. The lone hit in the inning was a single up the middle by Jackson.

Webster's lead grew to 5-1 in hte top of the third as they recorded five hits and scored two runs on an RBI double by Jackson and an RBI single by freshman catcher Paige Thomas (Emporia, Kan./Emporia).

Greenville would get two those runs back in the bottom of the third to cut Webster's lead to 5-3 on an homer by Desirae Yost and an RBI single by Hayley Jenkins.

Burroughs' homer, which was her second on the season, in the fourth gave the Gorloks an 8-3 lead. Burroughs homer came after junior third baseman Sheyla Iniguez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) single to second to open the inning and after Stone got two outs, sophomore first baseman Ashlee Seltzer (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) recorded a single to left.

The Panthers would complete the scoring in the bottom of the seventh as Yost hit a second home run as this one came off of sophomore relief pitcher Alexandria Cafolla (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood West), who relieved Mendenhall in the fifth inning.

Mendenhall (3-1) earned the win as she pitched four innings and allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned), while walking one and striking out four.

Stone (3-7) took the loss in the circle as she pitched four innings and allowed nine hits and eight runs (five earned), while striking out two and walking none.

Kendall Farr paced Greenville with three hits, while Yost and Hoffmann each had two of Greenville's 10 hits.

Greenville committed four errors, while Webster hit two errors and the two teams combined to leave 15 runners on base as Greenville left eight and Webster stranded seven.

In the second game of the twinbill, both teams got complete game pitching performances from their pitchers as Webster senior Morgan Parrish (Lawrenceville, Ill./Parkland College) started in the circle for Webster and allowed four hits and two runs, while striking out six and walking none in falling to 3-2 on the season, while Alison Kraus (1-2) pitched seven innings and allowed six hits and one run, while walking one and striking out three.

Along with strong pitching, the teams offenses combined for 10 hits as Webster had six hits, including two hits from Seltzer and Greenville recorded four hits by four different players.

The Panthers got all of its offense it needed in the bottom of the second of the nightcap thanks to an RBI double by Olivia Shipman and an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Katie Myers.

Webster, though, would get one of those runs back in the top of the fourth inning as freshman shortstop Sidney Holtz (Taylorsville, Utah/Murray) led off the inning by reaching in an error, moved to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a passed ball and would then score when Burroughs delivered a run scoring single up the middle off of Klaus.

The Gorloks would put two runners on base in the sixth on singles by both Seltzer and Jackson, but Klaus would leave those two runners on base as she forced freshman designated player Jaleesa Smith (Harrison, Tenn./Chattanooga Central) to ground out to first to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Parrish got into a jam as she allowed a lead-off double to Stone and then the next hitter reached on an error by Holtz at short, before Parrish would battle back to retire the next three hitters in order to leave two runners on base.

The Gorloks defense committed two errors and Greenville had one in the second game, whole the teams combined to leave 10 runners on base as Webster left six and Greenville left four.

Webster will continue on the road this coming Sunday. April 11 as they travel to Louisville, Ky., to open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Spalding University. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. ET.
