Gorloks Split in Decatur

DECATUR, Ill. – This afternoon the Webster volleyball team was back on the court when they traveled to Decatur, Illinois, to compete in the Millikin Invitational. The Gorloks split the matches on the day as they swept Blackburn (Ill.) College in three straight sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-17), and then were defeated by Millikin (Ill.) University in three sets (17-25, 17-25, 15-25) to move to 5-3 on the season.

Match 1
In their first match of the day, the Gorloks put together 44 kills in three sets. They recorded 15 in the first set, 10 in the second set, and 19 in the third set while posting a .246 attacking percentage. They played tough defensively as they limited the Beavers to just 20 kills over three sets and a .073 attacking percentage. The Gorloks recorded 50 digs, two blocks, 36 assists, and six service aces in the match.

Mary Nelson led the attack for the Gorloks as she finished with a match high 12 kills. In addition to Nelson, Lauren Borik added 10 kills and Madison Katz finished with nine kills.

Ali Spohr ran the offense for the Gorloks as she finished with a match high 17 assists over three sets. Mary Nelson also finished with double-digit assists as she picked up 10 in the match.

Kyra Gensel, the reigning SLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, led the team defensively as she finished with a match high 15 digs. Lauren Borik and Ali Spohr also had nice games defensively as they finished with 11 digs and nine digs, respectively.

Match 2
In their second match of the day, the Gorloks had a tough time getting their attack going as they were held to just 21 kills in the match. They recorded five kills in the first set, 11 kills in the second set, and five kills in the third set while recording a .096 attacking percentage. The Big Blue finished with 43 kills and a .279 attacking percentage. The Gorloks also added 43 digs, 19 assists, three blocks and two service aces in the match.

Lauren Borik led the attack for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high seven kills. In addition to Borik, Ali Spohr and Madison Katz both added four kills. Spohr also led the team in assists as she recorded seven in the game.

Tori Cichelero led the team defensively as she finished with a team high 10 digs. Lauren Borik and Kyra Gensel finished with 10 and nine digs, respectively.

The Gorloks return to the court on Saturday, September 18th when they continue play in the Millikin Invitational. They will play two matches on the day including a 12 p.m. start against Central (Iowa) College and a 4 p.m. start against Illinois College.
