TERRA HAUTE, Ind. – The Webster University volleyball team was back on the court this evening when they traveled to Terra Haute, Indiana, to take on the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) Fighting Engineers. The Gorlosk were defeated by the Fighting Engineers in five sets (19-25, 25-18, 27-29, 25-23, 8-15) to fall to 6-6 on the season. With the win, Rose-Hulman improves to 6-6 on the season.
The Gorloks recorded 46 kills on the night as they finished with eight kills in the first set, 13 kills in the second set, 12 kills in the third set, 10 kills in the fourth set, and three kills in the fifth set. They added 11 service aces, six blocks, 39 assists, and 80 digs. The Fighting Engineers finished with 74 kills while also racking up 90 digs.
After dropping the first set by a final score of 25-19, the Gorloks were able to bounce back in the second set and jump out to an early lead. They went on an 8-2 run midway through the set and cruised to a 25-18 win. They fell in a close third set by a final score 29-27, but were once again able to bounce back in the fourth set to tie the match at two games apiece. The Gorloks exchanged points to start the fifth set, but a 9-3 run from Rose-Hulman to end the set solidified the win for the Fighting Engineers.
Lauren Borik and
Mary Nelson led the attack for the Gorloks as both finished with double-digit kills. Borik finished with a team high 16 kills while Nelson added 15 for Webster.
Emma Leppien had a standout performance for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 19 assists to go with 11 digs.
Mary Nelson also helped run the offense as she finished with 12 assists in the match.
Tori Cichelero led the team defensively as she finished tied for a match high 21 digs. In addition to Cichelero,
Kyra Gensel finished with 15 digs and
Lauren Borik finished with 10 digs.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Thursday, September 23
rd when they travel across town to Fontbonne (Mo.) University to take on the Griffins in a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
