ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back on the court this evening when they traveled across town to Fontbonne (Mo.) University to take on the Griffins in a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Griffins in four straight sets (22-25, 22-25, 25-15, 16-25) to fall to 6-7 on the season and 2-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the win, Fontbonne improves to 1-4 on the season and 1-1 in SLIAC play.
After dropping both of the first two sets by final scores of 25-22, the Gorloks were able to battle back in the third set to cut the Griffins lead to 2-1 in the match. They jumped to a 5-0 lead to start the third set and never let the Griffins back in the game as they cruised to a third set victory. However, after finding themselves up early in the fourth, the Griffins were able to battle back and went on a 15-3 run midway through the set to solidify the win.
The Gorloks attack struggled to get anything going all night as they recorded 38 kills and 27 attacking errors for a .077 attacking percentage in the match. The Griffins finished with 49 kills and 32 attacking errors for a .111 attacking percentage. The Gorloks also added eight service aces, seven blocks, 35 assists, and 64 digs.
Lauren Borik led the attack for the Gorloks as she finished with a match 17 kills.
Mary Nelson and
Ali Spohr finished with six kills and five kills, respectively, to lead Webster.
Emma Leppien ran the offense for the Gorloks as she finished with 10 assists in the match.
Mary Nelson added eight.
Kyra Gensel led the way defensively as she finished tied for a match high 22 digs. In addition to Gensel,
Emma Leppien finished with 11 digs and
Mary Nelson finished with nine.
The Gorloks return to the court on Tuesday, September 28
th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka College Red Devils in a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
