ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University volleyball team was back in action when they played host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers in a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated in four sets (16-25, 25-22, 13-25, 15-25) to fall to 7-8 on the season and 3-2 in SLIAC play. With the win, the Panthers improve to 10-2 on the season and 4-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Gorloks put together 42 kills over the four sets including ten in the first set, 14 in the second set, and nine in each of the last two sets. They finished with an attacking percentage of .071 while recording two service aces, nine blocks, 37 assists, and 85 digs. The Panthers finished with 54 kills and a .211 attacking percentage.
After dropping the first set by a final score of 25-16, the Gorloks bounced back in the second set to tie the match at one game apiece. They got off to a great start in the set as they jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. The Panthers battled back and cut the score to two, but another run from the Gorloks put them up 17-11 midway through the game. The Panthers once again battled back and cut the lead to two late in the set, but Webster was able to pick up the final point of the game to solidify the second set win.
The Gorloks did their best to carry over their momentum into the third set but struggled to get anything as the Panthers won the game by a final score of 25-13. The fourth set was similar to the third as the Gorloks found themselves down early and were never able to recover.
Lauren Borik led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a match high 21 digs and a team high 17 kills. In addition to Borik,
Mary Nelson finished with 10 assists and 20 digs,
Emma Leppien finished with 13 assists, and
Kyra Gensel recorded 16 digs to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Tuesday, October 5
th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays in a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
