ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were able to stay unbeaten on the season as they defeated the Panthers by a final score of 104-65 to improve to 13-0 on the year and 4-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-10 on the year and 0-5 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks shot the ball well in this one as they went 44-for-78 (55.1%) from the floor and 9-for-20 (45.0%) from behind the arc. The outrebounded the Panthers 44-33 and forced them to turn the ball over 34 times in the contest. They turned those 34 turnovers into 48 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out a season high 25 assists in the game.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead. The Panther bounced back and cut the lead to three, but another run from the Gorloks put them up 31-12 heading into the second quarter. Webster continued to push the tempo in the second quarter and were able to grow their lead to 24 with just under eight minutes to play in the frame. They forced the Panthers to turn the ball over several times in the period and took a 56-30 lead into the locker room.
Addison Beussink led all scorers with 14 points in the half.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second half and were able to grow their lead to 31 in the first two minutes of the third quarter. They played well as the quarter progressed and were able to grow their lead to 88-46 heading into the fourth. The Panthers cut the lead to 37 late in the game but that was as close as they would get as the Gorloks closed them out down the stretch to solidify their 13
th win of the season.
Addison Beussink led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. In addition to Beussink,
Naomi Johnson finished with 16 points,
Bethany Lancaster added 13 points,
Kate Rolfes finished with 11 points, and
Emily Kuntze added nine points for the Gorloks. Lancaster also dished out a team high four assists.
The Gorloks are back in action on Tuesday, January 25
th when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. EST.
