Gorloks Split Tri-Match

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays and the Central (Iowa) College Dutch for a tri-match. The Gorloks defeated the Blue Jays in four sets (25-15, 23-15, 25-18, 25-22) and then were swept by the Dutch in three sets (13-25, 16-25, 20-25) to improve to 11-8 on the season and 6-3 in SLIAC play.

In their first match of the day, the Gorloks finished with 50 kills on 168 attacks for a .149 attacking percentage. They added nine service aces, five total blocks, 46 assists, and 90 digs. The Blue Jays finished with 48 kills on 184 attacks for a .092 attacking percentage.

Webster got off to a great start in the first set of the match as they jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. They continued to play well as the set progressed and cruised to a 25-15 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

After dropping the second set 25-23, the Gorloks came out in the third set and exchanged points with the Blue Jays. With the score tied at 12, Webster went on a 5-2 run to take a 17-14 lead in the game. The Blue Jays cut the lead to one, but the Gorloks were able to close out the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Gorloks found themselves trailing 13-10 early in the fourth set but were able to bounce back and tie the score at 17. They then went on an 8-5 run to close out the set and solidify the match.

Alyssa Jones and Kaylee Portell led the attack for Webster as they both finished with 10 kills. Emma Leppien also played a great game as she finished with a team high 23 assists to go along with 16 digs. In addition, Cassie Gray finished with a team high 23 digs while Taylor Thompson added 13 and Madison Katz finished with 11.

In their second match of the day, Webster finished with 24 kills on 123 attacks for a .041 attacking percentage. They added three service aces, three total blocks, 24 assists, and 58 digs. The Dutch finished with 42 kills on 121 attacks for a .207 attacking percentage.

Webster had a tough time getting anything going in the first set of the match. They trailed 14-12 midway through the set and then the Dutch went on an 11-1 run down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Dutch carried over their momentum into the second set and quickly jumped out to a 13-4 lead. Webster was able to cut the lead down to four, but the Dutch closed out the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Webster picked it up in the fourth set and started the game on a 10-4 run. The Dutch battled back and tied the score at 15, and then went on a 10-5 run to end the set to solidify the sweep.

Abby Jacobs led the attack for Webster as she finished with a team high eight kills. Delaney Demman led the offense as she finished with a team high eight assists while also posting 12 digs. Cassie Gray led the way defensively as she finished with a team high 13 digs.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Tuesday, October 18th when they travel across town to Maryville (Mo.) University to take on the Saints for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
