ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action tonight when they traveled to Maryville (Mo.) University to take on the NCAA Division II Saints for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were swept by the Saints in three straight sets (14-25, 19-25, 10-25) to fall to 11-9 on the season. With the win, the Saints improve to 16-8 on the year.
Webster finished the match with 12 kills on 102 attacks. The added three service aces, three total blocks, 10 assists, and 56 digs. The Saints finished with 55 kills on 123 attacks.
Webster came out in the first set and found themselves trailing 6-2 early. They battled back and cut the lead to three, but a 9-2 run from the Saints gave them a 19-9 lead late in the set. Maryville picked up the final points of the game and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Gorloks played well to start the second game as they scored the first four points of the set. The Saints tied the score at seven, and then went on a 7-3 run to take a 14-10 lead in the game. Webster cut the lead back down to three but that was as close as they would get as the Saints closed out the set to take a 2-0 advantage.
Webster had a tough time getting anything going in the third set as the Saints jumped out to a 10-6 lead. The Gorloks cut the lead to two, but a 15-2 run to end the game solidified the match for Maryville.
Emma Leppien led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a match high 19 digs. In addition,
Cassie Gray finished with 13 digs to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks return to the court on Thursday, October 20
th when they host the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
