Gorloks Earn Sweep on Senior Night

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University volleyball team was back in action when they played host to the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks swept the Panthers in three straight sets (25-7, 25-5, 25-7) to improve to 14-10 on the season and 9-4 in conference play. With the sweep, the Panthers fall to 0-16 on the year and 0-14 in the SLIAC.

Prior to the start of the match, the team honored their seven seniors for all of the hard work they have put while sporting a Gorlok uniform. Tori Cichelero, Jordan Mueller , Lauren Borik, Emma Leppien, Julia Frey, Katie Eskildson, and Kaylee Portell were all recognized.

The Gorloks finished the match with 33 kills on 67 attacks for a .388 attacking percentage. They added 26 digs, 15 service aces, two total blocks, and 28 assists. The Panthers finished with seven kills on 52 attacks.

Webster came out in the first set and jumped out to an early 11-3 lead. They continued to play well as the set progressed and grew their lead to 19-7 late in the game. They picked up the final points of the set and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second set and jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead. The Panthers scored the next point in the set, but then the Gorloks went on an 11-0 run to put themselves up 18-3 late in the game. Webster was able to close out the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Panthers came out in the third set and matched the Gorloks point-for-point to start the game. With the score tied at three, Webster went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-3 lead in the match. The Panthers cut the lead to seven but that was as close as they would get as Webster picked up the final points of the match to solidify the sweep.

Julia Frey led the attack for the Gorloks as she finished with a match high eight kills. Katie Eskildson and Kaylee Portell also played well as they finished with six and five kills, respectively. Emma Leppien ran the offense for Webster as she finished with a match high 11 assists to go along with six digs. Taylor Thompson led the team defensively as she finished with a team high seven digs.

The Gorloks return to the court on Thursday, October 27th when they travel to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for their final game of the regular season. First serve has been pushed back one hour to 7 p.m.
