ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's soccer team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 2-1 to improve to 12-2-3 on the season and 10-1-2 in conference play. With the loss, Spalding falls to 3-8-6 on the season and 2-6-5 in the SLIAC.
With the win tonight, the Gorloks have clinched the SLIAC Regular Season title. This marks their third straight regular season title and their 10
th in program history. The team has clinched the top seed in the SLIAC Tournament and have solidified home field advantage throughout the tournament.
The Gorloks outshot the Golden Eagles 19-10 in the contest and put nine shots on target compared to five from Spalding. Webster and Spalding both finished with four corner kicks.
Webster got on the board early in this one Aamahn Murvin earned a penalty kick in the 12
th minute of the game. Murvin took the penalty for Webster and buried his shot in the bottom left corner for his 13
th tally of the season.
After taking a 1-0 lead into the break, Webster was able to grow their lead to 2-0 in the 73
rd minute of the game. The Spalding keeper misplayed a long ball from Tavis Cameron and Mark Moore was there to clean up the mess as he finished off his sixth of the year.
The Golden Eagles turned up the pressure after the second goal and were able to get on the board in the 76
th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. However, Webster was able to hold them off down the stretch to earn the SLIAC Regular Season crown.
Ty Baudendistel was in goal tonight for Webster as he made four saves in his ninth win of the season.
Webster will conclude the regular season on Saturday, October 29
th when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC matchup. The game will kick off at 3 p.m.
