Borik Records 1,000th Career Kill in Win

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University volleyball team traveled down Big Bend to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins in four sets (25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22) to improve to 9-6 on the season and 4-3 in conference play. With the loss, the Griffins fall to 5-7 on the year and 2-2 in the SLIAC.

Webster finished the match with 48 kills on 154 attacks for a .208 attacking percentage. They added seven service aces, nine total blocks, 44 assists, and 81 digs. The Griffins finished the match with 54 kills on 178 attacks for a .146 attacking percentage.

The Gorloks came out in the first set and found themselves trailing 10-6 early. They battled back and tied the score at 10, and then went on a 10-2 run to take a 20-12 lead in the set. They picked up the final points of the game and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

After dropping the second set, Webster came out in the third set and jumped out to a 12-7 advantage. The Griffins cut the lead down to two, but that was as close as they would get as the Gorloks closed them out down the stretch to a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, both sides came out and exchanged points early. With the score tied at 11, Webster was able to go on a 5-1 run to take a 16-12 lead in the set. The Griffins cut the lead 22-21 late in the game, but the Gorloks picked up the final points of the set to solidify the win.

Lauren Borik led the way for Webster as she finished with a team high 11 kills to go along with 15 digs. Her 11 kills pushed her career total to 1,008 which makes her just the seventh player in Gorlok history to surpass the 1,000 career kill mark. She sits just 105 kills behind Jackie Shall for sixth all-time.

In addition, Abby Jacobs added nine kills while Alyssa Jones finished with eight. Emma Leppien and Delaney Demman ran the offense as Leppien finished with a team high 18 assists while Demman added 14 assists. Leppien and Madison Katz led the team defensively as they both finished with a team high 18 digs. Cassie Gray rounded out the top performers for Webster as she finished with 14 digs.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Friday, October 7th when they host the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. in Grant Gym.
