Gorloks Fall in Five Sets

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks fell in the match in five sets (18-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 8-15) to fall to 9-7 on the season. With the win, Monmouth improves to 7-10 on the year.

The Gorloks finished the match with 54 kills on 228 attacks for a .110 attacking percentage. They added eight service aces, 10 blocks, 61 assists, and 134 digs. The Fighting Scots ended the match with 65 kills on 227 attacks for a .159 attacking percentage.

After dropping the first two sets, Webster came out in the third set and found themselves trailing 7-3. They battled all the way back and tied the score at 19 before ending the set on a 6-3 run to cut the Monmouth lead to 2-1 in the match.

They carried over their momentum into the fourth set and matched the Fighting Scots point-for-point. With the score tied at 10, Webster went on an 11-4 run and held a 21-14 lead late in the game. Monmouth cut the lead to two, but Webster was able to pick up the final points of the set to tie the match at two.

Webster had a tough time getting anything going in the fifth set as they trailed 7-4 midway through the game. They quickly cut the lead to one, but an 8-2 run from the Fighting Scots solidified the five set win.

Kaylee Portell led the way for Webster as she finished with a career high 17 kills in the match. Abby Jacobs also had a nice game offensively as she finished with 10 kills. Emma Leppien and Ellie Biedenstein ran the attack for Webster as they both finished with 18 assists. Defensively, six Gorloks tallied double-digit digs as Cassie Gray finished with a team high 35 digs while Emma Leppien finished with 21, Madison Katz added 16, Taylor Thompson posted 14, Tyler Ramstack finished with 10, and Ellie Biedenstein finished with 10.

Webster is back in action on Wednesday, October 12th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to take on Eureka (Ill.) College for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
