ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's soccer team was back on the field this evening when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for their SLIAC Men's Soccer Semifinal match. The top seeded Gorloks defeated the fourth seeded Griffins by a final score of 3-2 to improve to 14-2-3 on the season and advance to the SLIAC Men's Soccer Final. With the loss, the Griffins season comes to an end with a 7-7-8 overall record and a 5-5-4 mark in SLIAC play.
The Gorloks outshot the Griffins 25-10 in the contest and put nine shots on target compared to six from Fontbonne. Webster also led in the corner count as they finished with six while Fontbonne finished with three.
The Griffins got on the board first in this one as they scored in the 19
th minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead. They scored a second goal in the 36
th minute of the contest and held a 2-0 lead at the break.
Webster came out in the second half and controlled the possession early. They were able to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 60
th minute of the contest when
Aamahn Murvin earned a penalty kick after getting taken down in the box.
Noah Abraham took the penalty for Webster and calmly placed his shot in the bottom right corner for his fourth tally of the season.
Webster continued to control the possession as the period progressed and were able to tie the score at two in the 76
th minute of the game.
Aamahn Murvin beat several defenders before slotting a pass across the box to
Nick Thomas who was able to bury his shot in the back of the net for his first of the season.
Webster took the lead in the 85
th minute of the game when they earned a corner kick.
Andy Mujezinovic took the corner and played it toward the near post where it hit off the Fontbonne defender and went into the back of the net to solidify the Gorloks spot in the SLIAC Men's Soccer Final.
Ty Baudendistel was in goal for the Gorloks as he recorded four saves in the game.
With the win tonight, the Gorloks will advance to the SLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament Final for the third straight season. Webster will take on the second seeded Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 5
th at WWT Soccer Park.
