ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's soccer team was back in action this evening when they played host the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for the SLIAC Women's Soccer Semifinals. The second seeded Gorloks were defeated by the third seeded Panthers by a final score of 3-1 to end their season with a 13-7-1 overall record. With the win, the Panthers will advance to the SLIAC Women's Soccer Final on Saturday.
The Gorloks outshot the Panthers 20-18 in the game and had 14 shots on target compared to nine from the Panthers. Webster also led in the corner count as they finished with two while the Panthers finished with one.
It did not take long for the Gorloks to get on the board in this one as
Mya Stegen scored her fourth of the year in the sixth minute of the contest. Stegen won the ball at the top of the box and blasted a right footed shot off the post and into the back of the net to give Webster a 1-0 lead. Greenville tied the score in the 33
rd minute and the game remained 1-1 at the break.
The Panthers came out firing in the second half as they scored two goals in the first three minutes of the period to give themselves a 3-1 lead. They continued to control the possession as the half progressed and never let the Gorloks get anything going. Webster had a couple chances in the half but were unable to capitalize as the Panthers held them off down the stretch to solidify their spot in the SLIAC Women's Soccer Final.
Taryn Banfield was in goal for the Gorloks as she recorded six saves in the contest.
This marks the end of the 2022 Webster University women's soccer season. The Gorloks finished the regular season with a 13-7-1 overall record and a 10-3-1 mark in the SLIAC. They will return to the pitch next fall.
