ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Fighting Scots by a final score of 83-49 to improve to 8-1 on the season. With the loss, Monmouth falls to 5-5 on the season.
The Gorloks went 33-for-68 (45.8%) from the floor and 7-for-17 (41.2%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Fighting Scots by a final count of 45-37 including 16 rebounds on the offensive end. They forced the Fighting Scots to turn the ball over 29 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 31 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 22 assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first quarter of the game and jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. They pushed their lead to as many as 12 in the quarter before taking a 17-8 advantage into the second. The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second and started the quarter on an 8-0 run to push their lead to 25-10 with eight minutes to play in the half. They would extend their lead to as many as 23 points in the period and held a 43-25 advantage at the break.
The Gorloks came out of the locker room and opened the third quarter on a 13-5 run to extend their lead to 26 midway through the period. Monmouth would cut the lead to 23, but another run to end the quarter put the Gorloks up 66-35 heading into the fourth. The Fighting Scots tried to get back into the game in the final frame but the damage was done as the Gorloks cruised to their fifth straight win.
Julie Baudendistel led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a game high 17 points.
Emily Wilson also finished in double figures as she posted 10 points. In addition,
Trinniti Matthews finished with a team high eight rebounds while
Kate Rolfes dished out a career high six assists.
The Gorloks will take a break for the holiday and be back in action on Wednesday, December 28
th when they travel to Pomona, California, to take on Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. PST.
