ELSAH, Ill. – This morning the Webster University women's tennis team kicked off their spring season when they traveled across the river to Elsah, Illinois, to take on the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Panther by a final score of 6-3 to improve to 3-2 on the season. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 2-2-1 on the year.
The Gorloks had a great showing in doubles as all three double teams won their matches.
Erin Brezovar and
Bailey Higgins defeated Camila Gomez and Gaby Quintero in doubles #1 by a final score of 8-6. In doubles #2,
Emma Ferguson and
Kylie Chitwood took down Veronica Volkart and Kelsi Huss by a final score of 8-4. Finally,
Maddie Mena and
Navone Armstrong finished off the doubles sweep in doubles #3 with an 8-6 win over Ruth Hummel and Caroline Carlson.
Bailey Higgins,
Maddie Mena, and
Emily Casey also picked up wins in the singles portion of the match to solidify the win for Webster. After falling behind in singles #3, Higgins bounced back in the second game with a 6-2 win to send it to a tie breaker. She was then able to win the tie breaker by a final score of 10-8 to solidify the win.
Maddie Mena picked up a win for the Gorloks in singles #5 as she defeated Ruth Hummel in back-to-back sets by final scores of 6-2.
Emily Casey notched the final win for Webster as she defeated Caroline Carlson by final scores of 6-2 and 6-0 in singles #6.
The Webster women's tennis team is back on the court on Friday, February 18
th when they host Hendrix (Ark.) College for a nonconference matchup. The match is set to start at 8 p.m. at Vetta Sunset.
