Gorloks Sweep Doubleheader in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – This afternoon the Webster softball team was back on the field when they traveled to Memphis, Tennessee. The Gorloks played two games on the day as they defeated the University of Dallas (Texas) by a final score of 21-1 in five innings and then defeated Rhodes (Tenn.) College by a final score of 10-9 to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Websters bats were rolling in the first game of the day as they put together 18 hits in the contest. They got off to a quick start as they scored seven runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early 7-0 lead. The Crusaders answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, but an eight-run rally from the Gorloks in the top of the second put them up 15-1 in the game. Webster continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and scored two more runs in the top of the fourth and four runs in the top of the fifth to solidify the weekend sweep of the Crusaders.

Sarah Shepard (1-1) got the win in this one as she allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out one in 2.0 innings in the circle. Arianna Arias came in to relieve Shepard as she allowed just one hit while striking out one in the final 3.0 innings of the game.

Ashlee Seltzer led the way offensively for the Gorloks as she went 3-for-3 with six RBI and two runs scored. Her six RBI were just one shy of tying the program record of seven in a game that has been done four times with the most recent being in 2010. Katie Croxall also had a nice game offensively as she went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. In addition, Kaelyn Kearney finished with three RBI and two runs scored, Sheyla Iniguez added two RBI and four runs scored, Arianna Arias finished with two RBI and two runs scored, Sheldon Underwood added two RBI and three runs scored, and Jaelin Holdaway finished with two RBI to round out the top offensive performers for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks bats stayed hot in the second game of the doubleheader as they finished with 15 hits in the contest. After finding themselves trialing 7-0 through three innings of play, the Gorloks picked it up in the fourth. They rallied for eight runs in the top of the frame to take an 8-7 lead in the game. They added two more runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run single from Taylor Jackson and held a 10-7 lead late in the contest. Rhodes scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh but the Gorloks were able to pick up the final outs to solidify the win.

Reese Waggoner was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed seven hits and seven earned runs while striking out one in 2.0 innings. Jaleesa Smith (1-0) came in to relieve Waggoner as she allowed three hits while striking out one in 2.0 scoreless innings. Arianna Arias and Sarah Shepard came in to close out the game as Arias allowed three hits and two earned runs in 2.1 innings while Shepard picked up the save after allowing just one hit in the final 0.2 innings of the contest.

Becka Brissette led the way at the plate for the Gorloks as she went 2-for-5 with four RBI and a two-run homerun. Katie Croxall also had a nice game as she went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. In addition, Taylor Jackson went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Kaelyn Kearney, Sheyla Iniguez, and Sheldon Underwood all added an RBI.

The softball team is back in action on Sunday, February 27th when they host Millikin (Ill.) University at Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex in Chesterfield, Missouri. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
