Gorloks Split Doubleheader to Open Spring Break

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this morning when they traveled to Lookout Mountain, Georgia, to take on the Covenant (Ga.) College Scots for a nonconference doubleheader. The Gorloks split the doubleheader as they fell in the first game by a final score of 3-2 and bounced back to win the second game by a final score of 5-2 to improve to 4-2 on the season. With the split, the Scots improve to 6-7 on the season.

In their first game of the day, Webster put together six hits in the loss. Covenant got on the board first as they scored a run in the bottom of the second to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. The Gorloks responded with two runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a two RBI single from Sheyla Iniguez, but a run in the bottom of the fifth and a run in the bottom of the sixth solidified the win for the Scots.

Sarah Shepard (1-2) was the starting pitcher in the first game as she allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out seven in her first complete game of the season.

Sheyla Iniguez led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-2 with two RBI. In addition. Sheldon Underwood and Katie Croxall both went 1-for-3 with a run scored while Kaelyn Kearney and Arianna Arias both added hits for the Gorloks.

In the second game of the day, the Gorloks put together seven hits in the win. Webster got on the board first in this one as Kaelyn Kearney's sacrifice fly in the top of the third scored Sheldon Underwood to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead. The Scots answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but a four-run rally from Webster in the top of the sixth solidified the split for the Gorloks.

Braidyn Burr got the start in this one as she allowed one hit while striking out one in 1.1 innings. Arianna Arias (1-0) came in to relieve Burr and was able to get her first win of the season after allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out four in the final 5.2 innings of the contest.

Jaelin Holdaway led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Katie Croxall also had a nice game as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored. In addition, Kaelyn Kearney, Sheyla Iniguez, and Emma Steltzer all added an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the field on Tuesday, March 15th when they take on Transylvania (Ky.) University in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. The Gorloks will play a single game starting at 12 p.m. EST at Covenant College.
