FULTON, Mo. – This evening the Webster University men's basketball team was back on the court when they traveled Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Bluejays for the quarterfinals of the SLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament. The Gorloks, who earned the fifth seed in the tournament, defeated the Bluejays by a final score of 80-66 to improve to 9-17 on the season and advance to the SLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament Semifinals. With the loss, the Bluejays season ends with a 10-16 overall record and 6-8 mark in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks shot the ball well in this one was they went 31-for-67 (46.3%) from the floor and 3-for-14 (21.4%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Bluejays 39-36 and pulled down 13 offensive boards. Webster forced 21 turnovers in the contest and turned those 21 turnovers into 25 points on the offensive end. The Gorloks took care of the ball as they only had 11 turnovers while dishing out eight assists.
The Bluejays got off to a good start in this one as they knocked down their first two shots of the game to take a 5-0 lead. Webster bounced back as the half progressed and answered with a 14-8 run to take a one-point advantage with 13 minutes to play in the period. The game went back and forth over the next few minutes, but with the score tied at 17 the Gorloks went on an 8-0 run to take a 25-17 advantage midway through the half. Webster grew their lead to as many as nine, but a 24-11 run from the Bluejays to end the half put them up 43-39 at the break.
Westminster carried over their momentum into the second half and grew their lead to seven in the first five minutes. The Gorloks battled back to tie the score at 55, and then went on an 12-2 run take a 66-57 lead with just under six minutes to play in the game. The Bluejays tried to get back into the game down the final stretch but the Gorloks always had an answer as they held them off to advance to the SLIAC Semifinals.
Karl Moore Jr. led the way for the Gorloks as he finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the year.
Wynne Brown Jr. also had a great game as he finished with a game high 17 points in the contest. In addition,
Rodson Etienne and
Markus Becton both added 11 points while
Jason Coleman finished with 10 points to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Thursday, February 24
th when they travel down Big Bend to Fontbonne (Mo.) University to take on the top seeded Griffins in the SLIAC Men's Basketball Semifinals. The game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
