ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University men's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Red Devils by a final score of 77-79 to fall to 5-17 on the season and 3-8 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the win, the Red Devils improve to 12-9 on the year and 8-2 in SLIAC play.
The Gorloks went 33-for-77 (42.9%) from the floor and 5-for-17 (29.4%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Red Devils 41-39 and pulled down 14 offensive rebounds. Webster forced Eureka to turn the ball over 14 times in the game and turned those 14 turnovers into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 16 assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and found themselves trailing 8-2 in the first four minutes. The Red Devils were clicking on all cylinders as the period progressed and held a 20-10 lead midway through the frame. Webster picked it up and went on a 14-2 run to take a 24-22 lead with eight minutes to play in the half. The game remained close over the next few minutes, but a 17-9 run down the final stretch of the frame put Webster up 43-36 at the break.
The Red Devils came out of the locker room and quickly tied the score at 47. Webster bounced back and responded with a 12-2 run over the next few minutes to take a 59-49 advantage. The Red Devils responded with a run of their own to cut the lead to three, but another run from the Gorloks put them up 71-63 with 7:28 remaining in the contest. The Red Devils answered back with 14-6 run over the next few minutes and the score was tied at 77 in the final minute of the game. They hit a shot with 10 seconds to play and did not allow the Gorloks to score on their final possession to solidify the win.
The Gorloks had five players score in double figures including
Karl Moore Jr. who finished with a season high 16 points and a game high 12 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the year. In addition,
Bryce Woolridge finished with 13 points,
Stephen Hawkins added 12 points,
Rodson Etienne finished with 12 points, and
Jason Coleman added 10 points. Etienne also finished with a team high five assists in the contest.
The Gorloks return to the court on Saturday, February 12
th when they travel across the river to Elsah, Illinois, to take on the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 3 p.m.
