DEMOREST, Ga. – The Webster University softball team continued their spring break trip this afternoon when they traveled to Demorest, Georgia, to take on the Piedmont (Ga.) University Lions for a nonconference doubleheader. The Gorloks were swept in the doubleheader as they fell in the first game by a final score of 8-0 and in the second game by a final score of 5-4 to fall to 4-5 on the season. With the sweep, the Lions improve to 9-8 on the year.
The Gorloks had a tough time getting their offense going in the first game as they were held to just six hits in the contest. The Lions scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth, three runs in the bottom of the third, and a run in the bottom of the fifth to solidify the win.
Sarah Shepard (1-3) got the start in this one as she allowed four hits while striking out one in 1.2 innings in the circle.
Arianna Arias and
Braidyn Burr pitched in relief as the two combined to allow eight hits and four earned runs while striking out one in the final 3.0 innings of the game.
Lucy St. John led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-2 on the day.
Sheyla Iniguez also picked up two hits in the contest as she finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Ashlee Seltzer and
Paige Thomas picked up the final two hits for the Gorloks.
The Gorloks continued to struggle at the plate in the second game as they recorded five hits in the contest. They got on the board first as
Katie Croxall singled up the middle to score
Erica Wright and give Webster a 1-0 lead.
Kaelyn Kearney added to the lead later in the inning as she singled to right field to score
Sheldon Underwood and give the Gorloks a 2-0 advantage. The Lions answered back and scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but a two-run double from
Emma Bovaconti in the top of the fifth gave Webster a 4-3 lead. The Lions answered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame and picked up the final outs of the contest to solidify the win.
Sarah Shepard (1-4) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed nine hits and three earned runs while striking out six in her second complete game of the season.
Emma Bovaconti led the way for the Gorloks as she went 1-for-2 with two RBI. In addition,
Katie Croxall went 1-for-4 with an RBI and
Kaelyn Kearney went 1-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
Webster returns to the field on Friday, March 18
th when they travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to take on the Emory (Ga.) University Eagles. They will play on game on the day starting at 1 p.m. EST.
