Gorloks Take Final Game of Spalding Series

LOUISVILLE, Ky. The #8 Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played the final game of their three-game series against the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles. The Gorloks, who were swept in their doubleheader yesterday, were able to bounce back this afternoon and defeat the Golden Eagles by a final score of 9-4 to improve to 11-5 on the season and 1-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, Spalding drops to 10-9 on the season and 2-1 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks put together 11 hits in the win. After finding themselves trailing 2-0 through the first four innings, Webster picked it up offensively in the fifth. Malik Wirges got the Gorloks on board in the top of the fifth when he hit a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1. Webster scored two more runs in the inning and held a 3-2 advantage. They added three runs in the top of seventh to extend their lead to 6-2, but a run from the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the frame cut the lead to 6-3 heading into the eighth. Webster rallied for one run in the top of the eighth, and two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 9-3 lead heading into the final half inning. Spalding picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Gorloks were able to record the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Carter Hunt (2-0) got the start in this one as he allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out one in 4.1 innings. J.T. Miller and Ben Kowalski pitched in relief of Hunt as the two combined to allow two hits and two earned runs while striking out six in the final 4.2 innings of the game.

Evan Evola led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4, including a solo homerun (2), with three RBI and two runs scored. Malik Wirges and Bryson Rigsby also had nice games as Wirges went 2-for-4 with a solo homerun (2) while Rigsby went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. In addition, Ben Swords finished with two RBI while Parker Wielt, Zach Goodman, and Matt Staker each added an RBI.

The Gorloks return to the diamond on Saturday, April 2nd when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on Westminster (Mo.) College for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at noon with the second game to follow.
