FULTON, Mo. – The 12
th ranked Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score 5-1 and the second game by a final score of 11-0 to improve to 13-5 on the season and 3-2 in SLIAC play. The Blue Jays drop to 4-16 with the sweep.
The Gorloks put together nine hits in the first game of the day. Webster got on the board first in this one as they scored two runs in the top of the second to jump out to an early lead. They added to their lead over the next two innings as they scored a run in the top of the third and a run in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead in the game. The Blue Jays answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but an RBI double from
Evan Evola in the top of the eighth solidified the win for the Gorloks.
Jordan Smevoll (4-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out five in his first complete game of the season.
Adam Lovell and
Evan Evola led the way at the plate as they both went 2-for-4 with a run scored. In addition,
Evan Evola,
Parker Wielt, Nick Martinez, and
Matt Staker all recorded an RBI.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second game of the day as they put together another nine-hit outing. They got on the board early as they scored a run in the top of the first and a run in the top of the second to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. They continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and were able to score three runs in the top of the fourth and three runs in the top of the seventh to hold an 8-0 advantage. Webster finished off their scoring in the top of the ninth when
Adam Lovell hit a three-run homerun to give the Gorloks an 11-0 win.
Alek Elges (4-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed four hits while striking out four in 7.0 scoreless innings.
Cooper Hake and
Bobby Strandt pitched in relief of Elges as the two combined to allow just one hit while striking out two in the final 2.0 innings of the game.
Adam Lovell led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-5 with a three-run homerun (1), two runs scored, and four RBI. In addition,
Evan Evola went 1-for-4 with two RBI,
Matt Staker went 1-for-4 with two RBI, and
Aron Hopp went 2-for-4 with an RBI while
Zach Goodman and
Ben Swords each added an RBI.
Webster will close out the three-game series with the Blue Jays on Sunday, April 3rd. The game is set to start at 2 p.m. in Fulton, Missouri.
