Swords Breaks Record in Gorloks Sweep

FULTON, Mo. – The 12th ranked Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for the final game of their three-game series. The Gorloks, who swept their doubleheader yesterday against the Blue Jays, were able to complete series sweep with a 9-2 win to improve to 14-5 on the season and 4-2 in SLIAC play. With the loss, Westminster falls to 4-17 on the year.

The Gorloks bats were rolling in this one as they put together 17 hits in the game. They got on the board first in the top of the first when A.J. Smith scored on an error to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but an RBI single from Matt Staker in the top of the third put the Gorloks up 2-1 in the game. The Gorloks continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and rallied for one run in the top of the sixth and five runs in the top of the seventh to push their lead to 8-1. Westminster scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but a final run from Webster in the top of the eighth solidified the sweep.

Carter Hunt (3-0) got the start in this one as he allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out three in 6.0 innings. J.T. Miller and Ben Kowalski pitched in relief as the two combined to allow one hit while striking out five in the final 3.0 innings of the game.

Matt Staker and A.J. Smith led the way at the plate as they each recorded three hits and an RBI in the game. Adam Lovell and Zach Goodman both hit homeruns in the game as Lovell went 1-for-5 with three RBI and Goodman went 2-for-6 with an RBI. In addition, Nate Mosqueda, Evan Evola, and Parker Wielt all added two hits in the contest.

It was a historic day for Ben Swords as he recorded his 227th career hit in the top of the ninth to become the all-time hits leader in Gorlok baseball history. Pat McSheehy previously set the record of 226 in 2002.

The Gorloks are back in action on Wednesday, April 6th when they host Washington (Mo.) University at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. The game is set to start at 6 p.m.
