Gorloks Win Fifth Straight

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 12th ranked Webster University baseball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were able to defeat the Bears by a final score of 4-3 to improve to 15-5 on the season. With the loss, the Bears fall to 9-11 on the year.

The Gorloks put together five hits in the game to capture their fifth straight win. The Bears got on the board first in this one as they scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 advantage. The Gorloks bounced back in the bottom half of the frame and rallied for three runs after an RBI double from Evan Evola and a two-run homerun from Parker Wielt (2) to take a 3-1 lead. The Bears cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but a solo homerun from Matt Staker (1) in the bottom of the seventh put the Gorloks up 4-2. The Bears scored a run in the top of the ninth, but the Gorloks were able to pick up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Deven Shulstad got the start in this one as he allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out two in 3.1 innings. Ben Kowalski (5-1) picked up the win as he allowed four hits in 5.1 innings of relief. Alek Elges recorded a save as he came in for the final out of the game.

Parker Wielt led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun. In addition, Matt Staker went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun and Evan Evola went 1-for-4 with an RBI to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 9th when they play host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for their first home SLIAC series of the season. The Gorloks will play a doubleheader against the Beavers starting at noon at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
