Gorloks Sweep Blackburn to Open Series

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 12th ranked Webster University baseball team was back on the diamond this afternoon when they played host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 4-1 and the second game by a final score of 10-0 (8 inn.) to improve to 17-5 on the season and 6-2 in SLIAC play. With the sweep, the Beavers fall to 3-22 on the year and 1-10 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Gorloks put together 10 hits in the first game of the day. They got on the board first in this one as they scored a run in the bottom of the first off of a sacrifice fly from A.J. Smith to take a 1-0 lead. The Beavers answered with a run in the top of the second, but a sacrifice bunt from Matt Staker in the bottom half of the inning gave the Gorloks a 2-1 lead. The Gorloks added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and shut down the Beavers down the stretch to solidify their sixth straight win.

Jordan Smevoll (4-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out six in 7.0 innings. Cooper Hake pitched in relief as he allowed one hit while striking out one in the final 2.0 innings of the game.

Adam Lovell led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. In addition, A.J. Smith went 1-for-3 with two RBI, Matt Staker added an RBI, and Evan Evola went 2-for-4.

The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second game as they put together 12 hits in the contest. After two scoreless innings, the Gorloks were able to get on the board in the bottom of the third as Adam Lovell hit an RBI single to put the Gorloks up 1-0. The Gorloks continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and were able to score one run the bottom of the third and three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0. The Beavers had a tough time getting anything going in the contest and the Gorloks were able to score five runs in the final three innings to solidify the doubleheader sweep.

Alek Elges (5-2) got the start in this one as he allowed two hits while striking out six in 5.2 innings. Bobby Strandt pitched in relief as he allowed just one hit while striking out four in the final 2.1 innings of the game.

R.J. LaRocco and A.J. Smith led the way at the plate as they both finished with two hits and two RBI including a solo homerun (1) from LaRocco in the fifth. Adam Lovell also finished with two RBI and Evan Evola added a solo homerun (3) to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.

The baseball team is back in action tomorrow, April 10th when they host the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for the final game of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
